Much-loved Australian label Tigerlily has returned to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia after a 17 year hiatus. The resort label that has been synonymous with our coastal way of life for several decades has, over the years, set some of the most exciting trends when it comes to swimwear and accessories. Owned by the Billabong group since 2007 (Tigerlily was originally founded by Jodhi Meares in 2000) it’s a retailer that still resonates with youthful buyers who covet the ever-present bohemian style.

Today’s show at Carriageworks revealed a new image for the label, however. Cruise-style was still at the core, but the pieces were far more constructed. It was a collection of sweet party ensembles and spring races frockery. The show began with hints of its bread and butter, with a range of embroidered off-white beach-covers, each cinched with wicker belts. However, the range then turned to trend-lead gelato suiting, floral halter dresses and even satin polka-dot slips. A pink drop-waist dress with bow-detail shoulders will surely be a popular springtime option, while the khaki two-piece nicely followed fashion’s current tailored suit fixation.

The direction was certainly a departure from the tribal prints, woven kaftans and island-style ready-to-wear we’re used to. It’s easy to understand why brands likes to venture into new territory, no one ever wants to rest on the expected and become stale. However, it may take some time for the devoted fans of Tigerlily to associate its new garden party image with their treasured home of gypsy wanderlust. No swimwear was present today, but no doubt will be revealed in the coming months, as we nudge closer to the new season.
