Laura Dern reunited with Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum and joined newcomers Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard for the next instalment of the Jurassic Park franchise this year. For the uninitiated of the fan favourite movies, Dern plays scientist Dr. Ellie Sattler and has returned to the film since conception in 1993. For what could be the final chapter in Jurassic Park – Jurassic World Dominion – the actress has left her mark in the most perfect way.

Speaking with Vanity Fair prior to the cinematic release this week, Dern shared that she opted out of any makeup to abolish a “sexist” stereotype. “She’s not some sexy-scientist trope. I didn’t wear makeup in this movie. She’s real. She’s divorced but loving life independent. She’s raised kids. And she’s at the height of her career, and she’s using it as service to the world. She’s really a modern, feminist female action hero, and that’s a beautiful message.”

The 55-year-old added that she hadn’t planned on returning to the film franchise and insisted that if Dr. Sattler was to come back to the silver screen, she was going to an “evolved scientist” and “true to who she was, which is being fearless yet vulnerable.”

“Her activism and feminism as a scientist was really important to me. I spoke with Steven and Colin, and we all wanted her to return with a new sense of self and advanced in her life and her work,” she said.

Dern has captivated viewers in many past films for her strong female character arcs including Big Little Lies and Little Women. The actress stepped out at the Los Angeles premiere overnight in a spliced orange and cerulean Prada ensemble.
