As Lady Gaga prepares to appear in Scott Ridley’s highly-anticipated biopic House of Gucci this month, the pop star and actress has addressed criticism from the original Gucci family. In a march interview with Italian wire service, ANSA, Patrizia Gucci (maiden name, Reggiani) expressed how “truly disappointed” she was with the film.
“I am rather annoyed at the fact that Lady Gaga is playing me in the new Ridley Scott film without having had the consideration and sensibility to come and meet me,” she told the outlet.
In a recent interview, Gaga pushed back on Reggiani’s comments and revealed that her choice to not approach the woman came down to artistic practice.
“I only felt that I could truly do this story justice if I approached it with the eye of a curious woman who was interested in possessing a journalistic spirit so that I could read between the lines of what was happening in the film’s scenes,” Gaga said. “Meaning that nobody was going to tell me who Patrizia Gucci was. Not even Patrizia Gucci.”
Reggiani is the ex-wife to the notorious Maurizio Gucci.
The A Star Is Born actress will star alongside Adam Driver, Jared Leto and Al Pacino. The forthcoming film is based on Sara Gay Forden’s book, The House of Gucci: A True Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed and Gaga has noted that she didn’t even read that.
“I did not want anything that had an opinion that would colour my thinking in any way,” she said.
Gaga added that she spent months perfecting the Italian accent and in some ways used method acting to embody the woman.
“I was either in my hotel room, living and speaking as Reggiani, or I was on set, living and speaking as her. I remember I went out into Italy one day with a hat on to take a walk. I hadn’t taken a walk in about two months and I panicked,” she recalled. “I thought I was on a movie set.”
House of Gucci follows the true story of the assassination of Maurizio Gucci and the subsequent fall of the fashion family dynasty. Reggiani was tried and convicted of orchestrating Mr Gucci’s murder in 1995 after he left her for a younger woman. She served 18 years in prison and was released in 2016.
The film will release in American theatres from November 24. Australian viewers will have to wait until December 26 to watch it.
