In January of 2024, footage of Kylie Jenner at the Jean Paul Gaultier Spring/Summer 2024 show in Paris went viral, with many commenters remarking that the 26-year-old was aging rapidly due to cosmetic work. Whether it was the lighting, the makeup, or the fact that Jenner had just hopped off a long-haul flight, the beauty mogul did look notably different from her selfies, and commenters flooded social media with a barrage of harsh words.
Now, in an episode of The Kardashians, Kylie has opened up about the endless scrutiny she’s received over the years about her appearance.
While talking to her sister, Kendall Jenner, she recalled her time at Paris Fashion Week and how she decided that she was “not going to wear a lot of makeup” while attending events, but that didn’t stop critics from coming for her looks. Many commenters accused the billionaire of exhibiting “filler face”, a term proliferated by the internet that describes a specific kind of aging resulting from too many unnecessary tweakments at an early age.
“I’m wearing too much makeup, and it’s like, ‘You’re wearing too much makeup.’ Then I go and don’t wear a lot of makeup, and someone catches me in a weird light,” she lamented. “It’s a miracle that I still have confidence, and I can still look in the mirror and think that I am pretty,”
As she has done in the past, Kylie also urged viewers to consider her past self as a comparison.
“You can look at pictures since I’m 13—I just have these lines,” the mom of two continued, pointing to her cheeks. “But I’ve had them since I was, like, a child.”
In a confessional moment, the Khy founder noted that it’s far from the first time she’s been exposed to the public’s disapproval.
“I just hear nasty things about myself all the time,” she continued, adding that “it just gets exhausting” after over a decade in the spotlight.
Luckily, Kendall was there to offer some support.
“I think that’s a general thing with our family: we’re dehumanised,” she responded. “They don’t think that there’s any rules with us. Whereas, like, if you talked the same way [they] do about us about any other woman, people would come to the defence all day long… for some reason with us, it’s like they don’t think we have any feelings.”
In response, Kylie, who recently admitted to regrets about getting a boob job in her teens, spoke about how her current looks are actually more true to her natural self than in years before.
“I went on a journey last year dissolving half of my lip filler,” she revealed. “I hate even having this conversation over and over and over again. It feels like it’s a waste of my breath because I think, with me, it is never going to change.”
Beginning to cry, she was consoled by Kendall and noted that she doesn’t typically let these things get to her.
“I’ve never cried about this before, but I guess it does affect me,” she said. “I always keep it pushing. I have to. I cannot get the comments to get me down. I have s—t to do. Rise above.”
While Kylie was eager to ignore the “hurtful” comments that said she looked “old,” Kendall praised her younger sister.
“I’m not even just saying this,” she began. “You’ve never looked younger, and you’ve never looked better.”
