Katie Holmes just stepped out wearing two skirts in one look, giving us a refreshing a reminder that she’s always been that girl.
As the reigning Upper West Side princess of stealth wealth street style, Holmes’ collections of Khaite bralettes and Tory Burch blazers have always been revered as the epitome of chic minimalism.
And now she’s taking a page out of the ultimate pinnacle of quiet luxury dressing, Succession’s Roy family, by swapping ludicrously capacious bags for a ludicrously deconstructed maxi skirt.
Although this look may not exactly get Tom Wambsgans’ tick of approval—and we doubt Shiv Roy will be wearing this into the Waystar Royco offices anytime soon—Holmes’ look is the acme of unconventional, uptown elegance. We just know that Bella Hadid is saving this look to her secret Pinterest mood board.
While out in New York, Holmes cut a relaxed figure in a classic white button-up shirtdress.
But, where the starchy collar, subtle pinstripe detailing and pleated mini may feel like a clinical school dress, Holmes’ choice to style the upper thigh-grazing garment with a jacquard asymmetrical skirt—yes, another skirt—softened the look entirely.
Keeping in with the ‘I just came from Parsons’ aesthetic, the Dawson’s Creek alum sported a pair of chic square-toe heeled ballet flats. Any oxymoron we know, but who are we from denying Holmes this elite display of garment construction and pattern play?
At first glance, this multi-skirt ensemble may seem like a smorgasbord of textures and prints, but given the occasion Holmes chose to wear the dimensional look, her nouveau prep aesthetic couldn’t be any more befitting for the occasion.
The 44-year-old actress opted for the trans-seasonal ensemble to attend the premiere of her latest project, Rare Objects, which she starred in, co-wrote and co-directed.
With the film chronically a complex friendship set against the backdrop of a New York City antique store, Holmes’ vintage-inspired skirt—or should we say skirts?—is an inspired choice to subtly sartorially pay homage to the upcoming body of work.
But, knowing Katie’s penchant for keeping fashion frivolous, this look was more likely than not born out of her desire to keep things light and playful.
Because nothing says ‘I like playing around with fashion’ more than the hem of your dress jarringly peeking out in the gashing hole in your deconstructed maxi.
If there’s anything to glean from this ensemble, it’s that two skirts are always better than one.
