Will they? Won’t they? These are the questions on the lips of those who keep up with the Gerbers, especially the relationship between 21-year-old Kaia Gerber and her actor boyfriend, 31-year-old Austin Butler.
If your social media algorithm hasn’t presented this news to you already, there’s a rumour proliferating through Hollywood that Butler secretly proposed to Gerber, with the duo’s engagement kept quiet since the alleged event in April.
Considering many of us are still reeling from the cursed image of Butler’s ex-girlfriend, Vanessa Hudgens, meeting a then 6-year-old Gerber at the premiere of High School Musical 2, the reports that the supermodel could be planning her nuptials with the Elvis star was enough to send shockwaves through the metaverse.
However, as it goes in Hollywood, we have “anonymous sources” reporting from either side of the story, and with Gerber recently spotted ring-free, it’s highly likely that these rumours are nothing more than internet fodder.
In late May, real-life Gossip Girl and pseudonymous celebrity “source”, DeuxMoi, published an Instagram DM between themselves and an anonymous tipper. “News about your favourite Elvis,” the so-called source wrote. “Can confirm he’s engaged with the model. He proposed back in April but they want to keep it low key,” the incognito informant added.
Of course, this is the same publication that reported that Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet were an item, so we’re taking everything they publish with a helping of salt unless overtly confirmed.
Soon after these blind items were published, another gossip tabloid published their own report denying DuexMoi’s intelligence. “A source close to the couple tells us the two are NOT engaged,” wrote TMZ, further fuelling doubts about the validity of the original claim.
However, the real pièce de résistance in this nameless journalism came from Gerber herself, stepping out in Los Angeles without a ring on her wedding finger. Proving the age-old idiom true, Gerber really said (without staying anything): “If you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all.”
