When it comes to workout wear, do you tend fall into the staunchly head-to-toe-black camp or rather rock a wild statement print?

Either way, THE UPSIDE’s new high summer collection is set to appeal. Inspired by late Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, the range – called Casa Azul – features plenty of dark colours and equally dark, edgy mood probably best summed up by the most significant print this season: a splattering of wide, witch-like eyes.

“For High Summer we were inspired by Frida, not only her incredible use of colour but also her ballsy spirit,” says the brand’s founder and womenswear designer, entrepreneur and former model Jodhi Meares. “We loved the idea of our UPSIDE girls working out and going about their day with a bit of that Kahlo fire and soul.”

Gone are the koi carp motifs, cute pink and green retro cactus prints and bright scribble prints of the tennis-themed last season. Rather, this summer range comes with a bolshier attitude, albeit with a few fun elements (polka dots girls and Breton prints for guys). Even the florals for both genders feature on black backgrounds. Prices for key pieces start at $109 for printed crop tops and $139 for matching midi pants.

Still, the clothes might be darker than usual but creating the campaign itself was clearly a blast. This behind-the-scenes video of the Sydney shoot by high profile photographer Jez Smith – a long-time collaborator and dear friend of Meares – proves the mood on the wind-swept set was more laid-back hacienda than hectic. Shop the collection online here.
