BFFs Jason Wu and Diane Kruger, who wears a bunny emblem knit from the new range

US-based Designer Jason Wu has no shortage of friends in impressively high places, including style-savvy POTUS Michelle Obama and Anna Wintour, but it’s the girlfriends he’s in contact with day to day who’ve inspired his new fashion line.
That group presumably includes BFF Diane Kruger, along with Girls star Zosia Mamet and Victoria’s Secret models Martha Hunt and Constance Jablonski – the latter three joined him in New York for a close-knit dinner to celebrate the launch of Grey Jason Wu, a lower price-point sister collection to his existing high-end Jason Wu range.
In true Wu style, the designer’s been drip-feeding Grey teasers on social media, with things like these beautiful sketches giving us clues about what we expect from the “uncomplicated chic” sister collection to his main line.

Grey, Wu says, is about dressing his friends who want beautiful clothes that sit in that tricky mid-zone between designer and fast fashion. “I often look to my friends for inspiration and I created this collection for women who look for beautifully made, well-considered clothes that have a sense of whimsy and uncomplicated chic that suit their everyday lives,” he said on Instagram, adding that Grey was the obvious name choice given it’s always been his fave colour. In fact, he’s so rapt with the tone, he asked the Pantone Colour Institute to create a brand new propriety-owned shade of grey for his new brand. “We thought, ‘This is a collection named after a colour. It would be really great to work with Pantone on a custom shade’.”

That “whimsy” comes into play in the form of cute prints and motifs and for the first collection Wu’s teamed up with American artist and sculptor Hunt Slonem, who’s most famous for the bunny paintings he’s been doing for 45 years, to collaborate on prints for his knits and silk chiffon dresses. Expect to see Diane rocking a bunny knit sometime very soon. We’re already jealous.
