In recent years, vintage shopping has not only become cool again, it’s become far cooler than buying something new. Not only are you helping the planet by opting for secondhand, but you’re avoiding the dated trend of having the same thing as everyone else on your Instagram grid (remember that Bottega Veneta overload circa 2018?).
Recently, celebrities have been spruiking their thrift store purchases, too. Bella Hadid has waxed lyrical about the vintage Jean Paul Gaultier jacket she found online and now Jameela Jamil is selling pieces from her personal wardrobe on beloved pre-owned luxury fashion site, Vestiaire Collective. There are also rumours on a certain notorious celebrity Instagram gossip account – @DeuxMoi, of course – that a few celebs have been hawking their free designer goods online – a side hustle that would likely get them in hot water with brands, but would be great for the wardrobes of us mere mortals (please send all hints our way).
Of course, Jamil is best known for her role on The Good Place and the community she’s built through her I Weigh platform, a space which began with Jamil wanting to help others to achieve body neutrality and which now has a following of millions with the aim to connect, empower, and amplify diverse voices in an accessible way. On a more frivolous note, Jamil also always looks incredible, often mixing more affordable high street brands with designer pieces on both the red carpet and her Instagram account.
Among other things, the actress and activist is selling, a vintage Chanel suit which she says “makes [her] feel like Jackie O”, a pair of Kenzo sunglasses, an Emporio Armani mini dress and a Matthew Williamson dress which she wore on her first date with her partner, musician James Blake.
What’s more, all profits from the sales will go directly to Choose Love, a non-profit supporting refugees around the world.
Her wardrobe is selling quickly, but the Chanel blazer is still there! On your marks, get set, go.
