Hunter Schafer has broken her silence on her relationship with Euphoria co-star Dominic Fike, a year after splitting in July 2023. The former couple, who met on the set of the award-winning HBO teen drama in 2021, dated for just over a year before ending things—a decision Schafer has never publicly commented on.
Now, sitting down with Call Her Daddy host Alex Cooper, the recent Kinds of Kindness star revealed that despite the break-up being a “clear parting”, she felt “fundamentally changed” by the experience. At the hour mark of the interview, Schafer candidly opened up about her past, confirming that she’s “excited to be talking about love” and shared that rumours of their separation being “messy” were not accurate.
She noted that their break up “mutually agreed upon” after they both recognized that it was not working. “We had a really good thing, but there were things in our own selves that had nothing to do with each other that kept coming up in the way of the relationship,” she added. She also acknowledged that being cheated on provided a major romantic revelation.
“It’s part of my truth, but that fundamentally changed me as a person. And it was this whole process of realising that cheating has nothing to do with you at all,” Schafer explained. “And it has everything to do with that person and whatever kind of pain they’re in or whatever they’re dealing with.” Fike subtly commented on his adulterous ways in his sophomore studio album, Sunburn.

“My last relationship was my first public relationship,” she said before adding she’s not sure if she’ll ever do it again. Schafer noted that she is now at a point in her life where she accepts that people will make up narratives, offering examples of the countless times she’s misgendered on the internet.
“A relationship is personal and private and you need to eliminate as many factors that are going to make it more complicated than it needs to be,” she continued. Schafer did, however, acknowledge Fike for seeing her exactly the way she was, particularly as a trans woman in her first cisgender relationship.
“This is a straight guy who is in the music scene, too, we are in a public relationship,” she said. “He’s dating a trans woman, and he’s completely straight. He’s only dated cis women before, and he’s toting me around, happy to be my boyfriend in front of the world. And people are saying horrible, nasty s*** because it’s like, ‘Oh, you’re so gay.’ He didn’t care at all.”
Prior to dating Fike, Schafer was reportedly in a relationship with Spanish singer Rosalía, which she lightly touched on, too. “I have a type!” she said about her track record of dating musicians. Schafer and Fike are reportedly set to reunite on screen in the upcoming third season of Euphoria, which is slated to begin filming in 2025. The core cast of Zendaya, Jacob Elordi and Sydney Sweeney are all set to return, too.
