Rocking tulle in the daytime is a bit of a tricky one to nail. Get too serious about it and you risk looking like a bridesmaid, but lean too far towards the ‘cute’ end of the spectrum, and you’ll look like a three-year-old on a play date.

But relax, because we’ve got the know-how to ensure your tulle-wearing falls squarely in the “she looks awesome” category. First thing’s first; stick to a tulle skirt. Anything else is too much and next to impossible to style for the daytime. But oh, the possibilities are endless with a tulle skirt! Ready? Let’s roll…

1. Length is everything Too long and you lose any sense of shape; too short and you cross the line into ballerina territory. We suggest just below the knee, with swathes of soft layers of tulle to give it movement, without making it too volumnous. The below-the-knee length also keeps it classy, while allowing you to push the overall look in pretty much any direction.

2. Skip the brights Put. The Fuchsia. Tutu. Down. When it comes to tulle, it’s wise to stay on the demure side of colour. Go too bright and you’ll look like you’re wearing a fancy-dress costume. Opt for a soft beige, teal, dusty pink or light blue. And possibly most importantly, avoid white: you’ll look like a bride-to-be on her hens’ outing (and nothing good can come of that).

3. For the office Team your tulle skirt with a structured, cropped jacket to up the sophistication level, and add a pair of heels to keep it professional (bonus fact: heels help to add extra swish-factor to your skirt when you walk. Score!)

4. For a breakfast date Pick your favourite tee and throw it on with your skirt. The clash of the girly tulle with your tomboy tee will add a cool element to your look. Opt for flat sandals or, for extra street cred, a pair of Chuck Taylors.

5. Lunch with the girls Add a silk top to keep it feminine and layer that with a zipper- and buckle-laden leather jacket to add a biker chic element to the look. If lunch calls for heels, keep them neutral (such as a pair of beige courts), but if you’re meeting at a trendy pub, opt for ballet flats.
