They say that the Golden Globes are usually the rowdiest bunch of the awards season but following a lack lustre ceremony via Zoom in 2021 and controversy over the governing board, Hollywood Foreign Press Association in recent years, the 79th Golden Globe Awards will be a significantly pared-down affair.

The HFPA has blamed a COVID-19 outbreak for the “private event” – there will be no red carpet, broadcast or stars – while the real reason stems from a slew of high-profile boycotting after the organisation was questioned over diversity and ethical standards (or lack thereof). For instance, Andra Day became only the second Black woman to win Best Actress in a Drama Film in 2021 behind Whoopi Goldberg in 1987.

In March last year, more than 100 publicity agencies announced they would withdraw cooperation with the Globes, streaming giants Netflix and Amazon Studios threatened to cut ties with the HFPA and NBC revealed it would not air the ceremony. So where does that leave the 2022 event?

“Unless there is necessary fundamental reform within the organisation, I believe it is time that we take a step back from the HFPA and focus on the importance and strength of unity within our unions and the industry as a whole,” the Black Widow actor said in a statement in May 2021.
