If you’ve ever spoken to a woman who has shaved her head you’ll have been tempted to do the same. Their response is always one of genuine empowerment, an eschewing of the male gaze “that every woman needs to do once in their lives.” Pop sensation Halsey is the latest to support that message, shaving her head live on camera, streamed to her millions of TikTok followers.

The singer later debuted her new ‘do on Instagram, garnering a cool 2.3 million likes of support. Halsey, whose hair has chopped and changed into countless styles, lengths and colours throughout her career, took to Twitter to field questions from interested fans, revealing that she’d made the decision to shave her head simply because she missed being bald.

“I was growing it out for so long and I told myself I wouldn’t shave it ’til I saw what it was like healthy and long and then I saw it healthy and long and said ‘mm this is nice but I miss bald.’ and then so I did it!” she wrote. Halsey joins a long line of A-listers who have embraced a shaved head, including Lupita Nyong’o, Jessie J and model Adwoa Aboah. Actresses like Angelina Jolie, Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman, Cara Delevingne and Kirsten Stewart have all shaved their heads for film roles.

Aside from being purely aesthetic, Halsey has previously spoken out about the political side of haircare. Last year she openly lamented the difficulties women of colour experience in regards to how society treats their natural hair. “I’ve been traveling for years now, and it’s been so frustrating that the hotel toiletry industry entirely alienates people of colour,” she Tweeted in September of last year. “I can’t use this perfumed watered down white people shampoo. Neither can 50% of your customers. Annoying.”
