When it comes to Hailey Bieber’s street style game, her recent ensembles have deviated from her tried and tested silhouettes of a solid, boxy blazer and all-American ‘girl next door’ jeans and sneaker combination.

It may be a sign of the times, but Bieber’s penchant for petrol head-inspired motocross jackets has reached an all-time high, with the style savant ushering an underground 90s rave revival thanks to her recent favouritism for London-based brand, Martine Rose.

Although the brand has been around since 2007, Hailey’s current fixation with the label is propelling the edgy streetwear aesthetic to new heights, in turn directing the watchful eyes of her fashion fanatics to the counter-culture style of yore.

Touching down in New York, Bieber cut a relaxed figure in a back-and-blue Martine Rose windbreaker, baggy jeans and square-toe loafers from Jil Sander.

The high-low aesthetic is something we’ve seen the Rhode Beauty founder toy with before, but her current obsession with the gorp-y outerwear once regarded as the uniform of club kids and doofers (see: a bush doof aficionado), is a new sartorial direction for the 26-year-old.

Earlier in the week, Bieber also stepped out in a beige Martine Rose sports jacket, Y/Project leather mini skirt and Nike Air Max 95s.

If it weren’t for the apparent ‘plandid’ paparazzi backdrop synonymous with Los Angeles, we wouldn’t be surprised if you told us Bieber was heading home in the early hours of the morning from cult-night clubs like Fabric or Printworks.

If these looks tell us anything, it’s that the Y2K reign is clearly drawing to a close, with the style set favouring the nostalgia and unadulterated debauchery that comes with the panache of oversized rave-wear.

Don’t be surprised if Bieber steps out in a graphic t-shirt and distressed acid-wash jeans à la Mark Renton in Trainspotting, because the underground mid-90s style isn’t going anywhere soon.
