Hailey Bieber and Selena Gomez’s truce has reached an all-time high: Instagram likes. The two women, whose years-long cold war reached its peak last month, resulting in Gomez going offline and Bieber being endlessly bullied by the singer’s super fans, released separate statements last week asking the world for peace. Simultaneously, they followed each other on the platform and revealed they’d been speaking behind the scenes about how to put their Justin Bieber-bon feud behind them.
Now, Bieber is following up with a public show of support for Gomez, who was recently spotted on a date with Gigi Hadid’s ex-boyfriend Zayn Malik.
Over the weekend, the model liked Gomez’s throwback Instagram of herself with platinum hair and a print bikini. Bieber has liked Instagrams of Gomez in the past, including one her makeup artist, Hung Vanngo posted and two magazine covers of her for Vogue and ELLE, but this is the first time Bieber has liked one on Gomez’s page directly.
This quiet show of support comes after the pair shared separate statements to Instagram last Friday. Gomez went first, posting to Instagram Stories asking her fans to stop their harassment of Bieber.
“Hailey Bieber reached out to me and let me know that she has been receiving death threats and such hateful negativity,” the actress shared. “This isn’t what I stand for. No one should have to experience hate or bullying. I’ve always advocated for kindness and really want this all to stop. ♥️”
Bieber followed up with her own note, thanking Gomez for speaking out and adding that everyone, including herself, could stand to be more careful with what they say and post online.
“I want to thank Selena for speaking out, as her and I have been discussing the last few weeks how to move past this ongoing narrative between her and I,” she wrote on her Instagram Story. “The last few weeks have been very hard for everyone involved and millions of people are seeing so much hate around this, which is extremely harmful. While social media is an incredible way to connect and build community, moments like this only create extreme division instead of bringing people together.”
She added, “Things can always be taken out of context or construed differently than they were intended. We all need to be more thoughtful about what we post and what we say, including myself. In the end, I believe love will always be bigger than hate and negativity, and there is always an opportunity to meet each other with more empathy and compassion.”
