Try as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association might, the 2021 Golden Globe Awards just aren’t the glamorous affair they were hoping. From glitching live crosses via Zoom to pixelated waist-up views of gowns in hotel rooms, perhaps the worst part of watching this year’s ceremony was the heavy cloud of criticism hanging over the award body itself.

On Saturday, the Director’s Guild of America put its voice behind dozens of celebrities, including Jennifer Aniston and Olivia Wilde, demanding change within the HFPA, a committee of 87 journalists who are paid to decide the nomination list. These arbitrarily anointed members not only have some wobbly ethics, but not one of them is Black. Could this explain Emily In Paris’ dual nomination when the trailblazing Michaela-Coel-directed I May Destroy You received none? (A recent Los Angeles Times report found 30 HFPA members were flown to a lavish pre-pandemic TV set in Paris prior to the Darren Star-directed show being released.)

While we wait for the Golden Globes ceremony to begin – and see who will use their WiFi connection to call out such corruption – let’s turn our attention to the highest honour of the evening: Best Sartorial Exploit In A Hotel Room.

Amanda Seyfried

Seyfried is nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for her role in Netflix’s new drama Mank. Today, she could be found in an off-the-shoulder coral Oscar De la Renta gown in an unknown hotel room. “I have my son who is five months old, laying against a pillow in a tux,” Seyfried told E! News, gesturing to the couch behind her laptop. “I’m in a hotel room with my husband and family and my kids.

“Listen, this is so great,” she continued. “I am holding my son’s hand right now which I wouldn’t be able to do if I was on the red carpet so I’m trying to find the shining moment.”

Regina King

Good evening to Regina King and her dog who is laying calmly in the background during this live cross to the actress’ home/hotel room. King is nominated this evening for Best Director in a Motion picture for One Night In Miami – and looks stunning in a glittering Louis Vuitton.

Margot Robbie

One of the first to arrive on the real red carpet at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, Margot Robbie wore Chanel from the Spring/Summer 2021 collection. While the 30-year-old Australian actress isn’t nominated for any roles this Golden Globes season, Promising Young Woman – the affecting film produced by Robbie’s production company LuckyChap Entertainment – has four nominations this evening, including one for Best Drama Motion Picture.

Cynthia Erivo

Nominated last year for her acting and vocal performance in Harriet, Cynthia Erivo took virtual dressing to dramatic new heights in Valentino Haute Couture, direct from last month’s runway in Paris. Pulled by stylist Jason Bolden, the neon green shade with white leather gloves were teamed with a pair of Valentino’s platforms which, let’s be honest, can only be worn while in stationary pose. Perfect for a virtual event.

Kate Hudson

“I have my family outside and we’re celebrating,” Kate Hudson who is nominated this evening for Best Actress in A Musical or Comedy Motion Picture for her role in Music, told E! News. In a Louis Vuitton gown  and Bvlgari earrings, Hudson was a shining pixelated beauty in the living room of her Pacific Palisades home and seemed optimistic when referencing the new regime. “There is that moment where you do awards ceremonies and you get in the car and everyone is waving – it’s adrenaline. I do feel like because I have a big family, we’re trying to bring a celebratory feeling to [tonight] – I think we should do this more often!”

Carey Mulligan

Carey Mulligan is nominated for her incredible performance in Promising Young Woman. Coming to the world via a hotel room in London, Mulligan wore a blush pink satin gown and Cartier Reflection de Cartier High Jewellery left ear cuff. With five princess-cut diamonds totalling 1.53 carats, Mulligan is already a winner in our eyes. But don’t be fooled, this was no waist-up show. “This is the first time I’ve worn heels in a good 18 months I think,” Mulligan told E! News.

Julia Garner

If it was your first Golden Globes ceremony and you wanted to make an impression, which designer would you choose? While this editor would go Versace, Ozark‘s Julia Garner may have just changed her mind with this plunging neckline from Prada. “I just wanted to wear [Prada], and I just love their clothes and I feel beautiful in it, so why not?” Garner told E! News. The actress is nominated for Best Supporting actress in a Series, Miniseries, or Motion picture for her role as Ruth Langmore.

Andra Day

The 36-year-old The United States vs. Billie Holiday actress stunned in Chanel Summer 2021 Haute Couture, a stand-out with its macrame bodice and paired with a deep mulberry/high glossed lip.

Elle Fanning

Nominated for her first Golden Globe for her role in The Great, Elle Fanning wore a glacial blue custom-made Gucci gown to the virtual ceremony. And we think this one might be a close second to Erivo’s Valentino.

Tina Fey

Hosting the Golden Globes from New York while your co-host – who literally finishes your sentences – is in Los Angeles, is no easy feat. Thankfully Fey did address the HFPA scandal noting that even with “stupid things [like awards shows] inclusivity is important, and there are no Black members of the Hollywood Foreign Press,” she said. “You’ve got to change that.”
