As any devoted reader of fashion magazines from the early noughts can sympathise, as we get older, the more we realise the hours we spent pouring over curating the perfect day-to-night look were futile. Yes, there are multiple factors at play here—after-work drinks are no longer as frequent, work from home has allowed us to change outfits entirely and the idea optionally of spending more than 12 hours in the same clothes no longer sounds appealing—but the art of putting together a multi-tasking silhouette seems to be disappearing.

But not all hope is lost. Take Gigi Hadid, who turned a simple errand-running outfit into a supermodel off-duty outfit with a few minor accessory modifications. The Guest In Residence founder has just touched down in Manhattan after spending a few days in California’s Napa Valley dancing to Fleetwood Mac and Pearl Jam with Bradley Cooper. Getting back to business, the 29-year-old wasted no time filling out her itinerary resulting in what can only be described as a tutorial in styling a hero piece.

The style in question is a floaty maxi skirt featuring eyelet punctures and laser-cut crescent shapes. (An aesthetic just recently sported by Bella Hadid while promoting ‘Ôrebella, too.) She first donned the look for a quick getaway after spending an evening at the actor-director’s house.

Styling it with a white body-conscious t-shirt, her summertime casual getup was completed with a Marc-Jacobs-for-Perry-Ellis-1992-esque blue houndstooth flannel from Danish brand Munthe. Adding a baseball cap, Miu Miu’s large Ivy tote bag in suede and red Converse, Hadid’s all-American spin on the bohemian silhouette felt equally fitting to her SoCal upbringing, her signature sporty street style and timed to the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics.

Later in the evening, while dining at the casual Thai hotspot Love Mama, the star continued the hottest hue of the season in a scarlet cashmere cardigan and Wales Bonner sambas. (See the looks, here).

If anything is to be gleaned from this outfit, it’s that choosing a motif to transition you from day to night is the most effective way to style your statement piece. Hadid’s painting the town red, one look at a time.
