Winged liner has countless of iterations. From the cat-eye OG (Cleopatra and crew in Ancient Egypt), to its ’60s musings on Warhol’s girls, to the recent runway preoccupation (Miu Miu, Marc Jacobs, Fendi); the winged line is undoubtedly one of the most enduring makeup moves of all time.
With a heavy-handed application, embrace the winged eye with a little more brawn and bulk. Translation? Chunk it up. Whilst precision is key with any kind of winged line, don’t be overly meticulous with its execution, your main focus here is to keep it thickset and solid; bulking it out rather that delicately tapering it at its point. Don’t go in with a wonky line, but simply keep it rounder through centre and work out to a solid wing (great news for those non-arty types).
When playing with bigger, architectural shapes, however, pace is keynote; slow it down. Particularly when it comes to inky, long-wear eyeliners like Bobbi Brown’s new Cat-Eye Gel Pots and Stila’s cult classic Waterproof Liquid Liner; they are practically budge-proof (read: supremely stubborn with any kind of removal – great for dancing, not so great for dodgy doodling), so take it in stages. You can even map out your intended shape with tiny dots, then it’s just a matter of joining the dots and bulking up.
And if you’re still wary, try an eyeliner that boats both a fine tip and flatter, thick end, like Estée Lauder’s Little Black Liner. This way you can start small and then bring out the big guns (or tips) when you’re feeling confident.
A modern take on a modish ’60s classic, keep the drama atop the eye, not underneath. This keeps the look fresh and youthful as oppose to costume party.
But, if you’re feeling all kinds of retro, just add a headband, some height at the root, and Kaia / Twiggy eat your heart out.
