Lorde showing up at Charli XCX’s first show on the ‘brat’ tour wasn’t the most notable encounter to go down at the Brooklyn headliner last night. Indeed, burgeoning model and bona fide ‘It’ girl, Gabbriette Betchel, used the show to confirm her engagement to The 1975’s frontman, Matty Healy.
In a series of Instagram Stories, the mononymously known social media sensation showcased her Carrie Bradshaw-approved black diamond engagement ring alongside the caption: “Marrying The 1975 is very brat”.
Given that Gabbriette’s ‘succubus chic’ aesthetic is what catapulted the nascent star into the zeitgeist, the musician popped the question with a ring fitting for her goth girl style.
The engagement ring features a cushion-cut diamond, estimated to be around 5 carats, set on a pavé band with a halo setting. Experts estimate the ring to be valued at $15,000USD ($22,518AUD).
Healy and Gabbriette began dating in September 2023 after reportedly being introduced by Charli XCX, their mutual friend.
For the united, XCX is engaged to Healy’s bandmate, drummer George Daniels and formerly cast her as the lead singer in the now-defunct punk band Nasty Cherry. Gabbriette was also referenced by XCX in the lyrics of her single “360”, citing her influence in pioneering the ghoul siren trend, and appeared in the accompanying music video.
Healy and Gabbriette’s relationship began only months after he split from Taylor Swift. Their romance was rumoured to have inspired a slew of songs from Swift’s eleventh album, The Tortured Poets Department, including the song the record is named after.
In the song, Swift sings about the only time her heart came close to proverbially “exploding” after an instance her boyfriend (which is speculated to be Healy) took her ring off her middle finger and put it on ‘the one’ over dinner.
It’s not clear if the singer did propose to Swift, but it’s evident that they both found their “end game” after dating each other.
