Can someone please explain the collective compulsive urge overzealous fans have to throw objects at celebrities? Hurling an obscure object—a wheel of cheese, a bra… the ashes of your dead parent—on stage while your favourite A-lister was performing or presenting felt innocent. But now, it appears that no one is exempt from being a victim of these spontaneous strikes, and the jovial act has taken a sinister turn.

Florence Pugh is the latest injured party in this slew of perplexing attacks. While in São Paulo to promote the science-fiction epic, Dune 2, Pugh and her castmates began posing for pictures before a flying object ultimately disrupted the proceedings.

Pugh, the film’s leads, Timothèe Chalamet and Zendaya, the upcoming antagonist, Austin Butler, and director Denis Villeneuve, had just delivered a panel talk discussing the highly-anticipated project. The cast and crew then formed a line to face fans when an unidentified audience member flung an obscured object at them and hit Pugh square in the face.

In the video, which you can see below, Pugh could be seen mouthing the word “Ow” and reaching for her eye in reaction to the contact. Her co-stars were quick to comfort her, as they gathered around the 27-year-old as she bent down to retrieve the item.

Similarly, Pugh’s Don’t Worry, Darling scene partner, Harry Styles, was also a casualty of fans’ misdemeanour, with the musician copping a water bottle to the face during a performance of his Love On Tour stadium show in Vienna. Earlier this year, pop star Bebe Rexa made global headlines after receiving a black eye from a fan’s phone being thrown at her mid-performance.

However, these devotees aren’t immune to receiving flying objects hurled back at them, either. After being splashed with liquid during a performance in Las Vegas, Cardi B responded to the fan who threw a cup on stage by launching her microphone at them. Taylor Swift even entered the narrative by requesting fans at her Argentina concert to stop throwing things on stage, saying: “It really freaks me out when stuff gets thrown on the stage.”
