It made (fashion) sense for one of the youngest and most lauded and awarded Australian fashion designers to launch Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia on Sunday afternoon at the Sydney Opera House; a foray of oversized jackets and sculpted waffle skirts. The spectacle marked an important moment for Dion Lee who was the first designer to erect a runway at the iconic architectural wonder in 2010. This year, it’s sails are in partnership with the world’s leading airline, Etihad Airways, who are responsible for connecting the fashion elite to its massive global network of destinations. Known as #RunwayToRunway the Etihad initiative offers frequent fashion travellers access to a unique loyalty program, one that supports international travel requirements such as special rate airfares, lounge access, complimentary upgrades, priority boarding and, of course, additional checked baggage. Go here for more details.

And as Lee can attest – at just 30-years-old, he’s been listed on the prestigious London and New York Fashion Week schedules for years now – home-grown designers can survive fashion’s cruel boom-and-bust cycle and co-exist among the world’s biggest international labels; city-to-city, runway-to-runway.

Fashion commentator and stylist Donny Galella caught up with key personalities ahead of Lee’s Resort 18 show.
