“I definitely think we should dress up more in our daily lives,” Giorgio Armani said in an interview about his new collection for Emporio Armani. “Laziness is not something I’m interested in. And we can always dress up a little bit more with that kind of effortlessness that I’ve always liked. It’s not merely about being put together in the best way, but also about taking care of what you wear.” Armani—the man and the brands he founded and continues to design for—has always exemplified a kind of old-world approach to glamour, one that feels particularly potent now. While recents news events in Europe make the word ‘optimism’ feel terribly inappropriate, there is a sense of ‘looking forward’ that is defining the fall winter 2022 shows, and Armani is at the forefront of that shift.

For FW ‘22 that meant playing with what it means to be “glamorous”. “In fashion the word ‘glamour’ has become synonymous with sparkle, seduction and allure,” said the brand’s accompanying show notes. “This collection takes the idea of glamour back to its roots: personal charm”. And so we saw chic, quintessential Milanese women swathed in grey woollen trousers and structured blazers, or in floor-skimming shearling coats and chunky leather boots. Glamour, of course, meaning look put-together and fabulous at every moment—whether you’re attending a red carpet gala or grabbing bread and milk at the local alimentari

But that’s not to say there wasn’t a little sparkle and seduction, too. Party dressing is, thankfully, back on social agenda, and the Emporio Armani woman will be there, dressed to the nines in sheer lace evening wear, structured velvet suiting (our favourite in a fabulous emerald shade), silk blouses in commanding graphic prints, or slinky mini dresses with playful, Noughties-style bubble hems. There were lightwear puffers, perfect for throwing over an aforementioned party dress and wearing to the club (can you imagine such a thing?), and the accessories married frivolity and practicality: re-imagined Mary Janes with multiple straps, and tiny handbags in bright colours. Hitting the dancefloor has never felt so enticing.
