After quietly going into voluntary administration in May this year, beloved Australian brand Dion Lee now enters liquidation. As CUE withdrew its financial support, releasing its controlling stake in the business, the brand was forced to pursue backing.
According to official reports, a creditors’ meeting this week saw administrator Antony Resnick of dVT Group recommend that the 15-year-old company be shuttered after the business failed to acquire a suitable buyer during the three-month voluntary administration process. A statement from administrators explained that despite interest from potential buyers, no acceptable offer had come forward in time, leading them to recommend a wind-up order.
The news follows significant clearance sales over the last few months, which saw the brand log sales of $3.2 million, with 20,000 garments. However, with some pieces marked as low as 80 per cent off, the reductions contribute to a lower profit margin.

Australian-American designer Dion Lee launched his namesake label in 2009 at the age of 23 and has been a fixture of New York Fashion Week since 2013.
Known for his innovative approach to fashion, which always served as a breath of fresh air in the Australian fashion landscape, Dion Lee quickly shot to success for his distinct industrial aesthetic that blended structure and sensuality. His work is often characterised by intricate cut-outs, hardware elements, and a strong focus on tailoring that subverts conventional notions of formality. In an industry where there is much for muchness, Lee always served as a beacon of creativity and remained steadfast in his vision despite shifts in trends.
Over the years, the brand has also garnered famous fans, including Anne Hathaway, Taylor Swift, Meghan Markle, Dua Lipa, Gigi Hadid, Ariana Grande and Hunter Schafer.

The brand’s last runway show was its Spring/Summer 2024 presentation, which was held in New York last September. Stock from newer collections is said to still be held up around the world.
Liquidators have noted that despite today’s news to wind up Dion Lee, its retail stores in Australia will continue operating until late September/early October. The brand’s online site is expected to continue trading until early November.
Worldwide, retail sales have seen alarming dips across both luxury and high-street, with consumer spending diving. But as a creative force, this is undoubtedly not the last we’ll see of Lee.
