Last year it was sequinned tops and boho blouses worn over One Teaspoon denim cut-offs, but for the Weekend One of Coachella 2018, the unofficial uniform-of-choice for model VIPs was considerably more brazen – if not slightly more ironic than swimsuits at a dusty desert event: bras as crop tops.

Regular Coachella fixture Kendall Jenner, for example, skipped the micro shorts for the first time in years and went super skimpy on the upper instead. Her wide-strapped black sports bra saved her oversized cargo pants and combat boots from dragging her into the frump zone quicker than one of her burly bodyguards could drag away unwelcome suitors.

Close friend Hailey Baldwin opted for a more overtly sexy vibe in her choice of underwear-worn-as-top. Her beaded bustier would be considered nothing less than racy lingerie in any other setting – ditto for fellow VS alumni Joan Smalls and Romee Strijd. Steamy in the desert, indeed.
Gigi Hadid went down a more playful route with a revealing one-shouldered crochet top by Australian brand She Made Me that was boho in essence but athletic in shape. (Side note, she carried on her also-Aussie One Teaspoon shorts with coloured Timberland boot tradition of years past.)

Still, she’s well acquainted with wearing sporty crops to VIP events – her Speed Racer-themed Spring/Summer 2018 capsule collection co-designed for Tommy Hilfiger last year featured a bra-like sports top she wore with leather pants and heels down the runway. Little wonder she looks so at home on the range.

Top of the crops: how to wear underwear on the outer
TIP 1: PICK A SPORTS BRA WITH A FASHION TWIST.
That could be a thick shoulder strap (with or without a bold logo, as per the current ‘80s throwback trend), a statement neckline or one-armed shape.The less functional it looks, the better. You’ll be thankful for the extra support though if you’re on the bounce all day.
TIP 2: KEEP THINGS CUTE BUT SIMPLE ON THE BOTTOM HALF.
Think plain denim, oversized pants or a long-sleeved jumpsuit knotted at the waist (aka Strijd style, which is ideal for trans-seasonal or day-to-night parties).
TIP 3: PUT THE PRINTS AWAY FOR ANOTHER DAY.
Partial as we are to a touch of leopard print or neon ikat for beach parties, the high-style way to wear underwear on its own is in monotone. Basic rule: the smaller the top, the better it looks in black or cream. Crisp white works for lace especially teamed with worn blue denim.
