In the famous word of Cindy Crawford, “Black tie is the norm for most award shows, but at the MTV Awards black tie is interpreted a little bit more creatively.” The year was 1992 and the supermodel was tasked with all-access red carpet interviews discussing all the fashion of the early nineties. She was famously dressed in a Versace gown from the then-current Miss S&M collection (Dua Lipa would go on to wear the same dress at the 2022 Grammy Awards).
Her interviewees however were a little more on the relaxed side, a reflection of the sartorial era. There was no social media, influencers and sponsorships. Just unadulterated style that was often purchased straight off the rack. Crawford shared a throwback video on the anniversary of the VMAs – formally known as the MTV Awards – via social media overnight and it’s a blast from the past.
The model first spoke with the infamous and rebellious, Mark Whalberg. The actor who was 21-years-old at the time wore Timberland boots, Gap jeans, a Michigan State sweatshirt, “cause I got the M. So, in case anybody knows who I am, I’m the M.” When choosing what to wear he threw on “what was clean”.
Anthony Kiedis, the lead vocalist of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, proved that thrift shopping was popular long before Depop. “I got this at a thrift store in London, England,” the musician said, referring to his double-breasted vest. “Somebody gave these to me last night at the show,” grabbing his knee-length shorts, and combat boots he’s had “for about eight years, ’cause they’re Gary Allen specials”.
The ‘House of Style’ segmented continued with an interview with fellow American model and actress, Stephanie Seymour. She wore the midi iteration of the little black dress, a Giorgio Sant’ Angelo ensemble which she purchased “off the rack” the morning before the red carpet.
Other stars included Debi Mazar, Duff McKagan (wearing Versace he bought himself), Jade Starling, Chris Robinson, Flavor Flav, Tori Spelling, Shannen Doherty and band En Vogue.
