Hair guru and celebrity stylist Chris Appleton has blessed our Instagram feed this morning, sharing an absolutely genius hack for thickening up a fine ponytail.
Titled ‘upgrade your pony game’, Appleton shared a reel where he simply parted the hair, tied up the top section into a high ponytail and crossed the bottom half over the top. The resulting look was big, bouncy and impressively thick — all without the need for heat, extensions, or difficult-to-master styling tricks. Perfect for those of us who can’t exactly maneouver our way around a blowdryer or hot tong at home.
The real secret is layering the hair, creating not just a thicker ponytail base, but also the illusion that the hair is piled high at the crown of the head. If you wanted to further bulk it up, you could even tease it at the elastic or work in some hard-working texture mist for grip.

Appleton is no doubt one of Hollywood’s most prominent stylists — he counts Dua Lipa, Jlo, Kylie Jenner and Kim Kardashian West among his usual clientele. He’s also the master of big, bold, voluminous styles, the most memorable style being Jlo’s insane curls at the 2020 Super Bowl (how did they withstand that much head-swinging?!).

It’s also not the first time Appleton has shared a useful (and easy!) hack on his social account. Four days ago he uploaded this tutorial demonstrating the perfect messy bun using two half-looped ponytails and piling them together.
