Say what you will about Hedi Slimane, the man who replaced Pheobe Philo at Celine sure knows how to make clothes and carry-alls the fashion set go gaga for.

That said, it makes perfect sense the first woman to be snapped carrying the controversial designer’s first signature bag created during his new tenure at Celine was Lady Gaga herself.

The singer sent shockwaves through the fashion world when she stepped out holding the Celine 16 Bag in Paris in August, our first glimpse of what’s set to become a cult classic amongst designer fashion aficionados in 2019.

Clearly, Gaga had a soft spot for the hard-handled style (note: one of the biggest trends for bags of any label in 2019) given she was snapped carrying it on no less than four different occasions since then. (Quite the statement given she must literally have hundreds of other lust-have bag options at hand.)

Now, images of the whole entire Celine Spring Summer 2019 collection have been revealed as the much-hyped collection finally drops into stores in Australia this week.

There are three key bag style-names to know this season: the C Bag, the Triomphe Clutch and the aforementioned 16, named after the couture house’s Paris address.

Slimane’s dipped back into the archives for inspiration on all. The C bag was inspired by a 1970s historical Celine clasp and comes in quilted versions, a signature of brand in the 1980s. The Triomphe bag’s diamond-faceted chain is a redesign of the chain links that circle the Arc De Triomphe, the brand’s original logo.

Sunglasses have always been a big seller for the brand given they’re a more accessible price point for customers than a $3000-plus bag, but the embellished versions this season (diamonte studs anyone?) are a departure from Philo’s chunky, minimalist past offerings.

In GRAZIA’s opinion, though, the lust-have in this new line has to be the handcuff neck bling. How very Slimane to be so subversive, even on a fine jewellery scale.

Celine’s available in Australia through the brand’s Chadstone and Westfield Sydney boutiques, plus select David Jones stores. More details here.
