Maybe it’s a coincidence that cargo pants and khaki shorts are back on trend at the same time the world meets Alicia Vikander’s incarnation of Lara Croft, but we’d rather consider it fashion providence.

When Tomb Raider hit our screens on March 15 (see here for GRAZIA’s interview with its leading lady), a raft of Croft-worthy cargo utilities also dropped into stores, giving you more pocket-room than you’ve had since the late ’90s.

Sensible as they are, there’s nothing basic about these reinvented staples: today’s shorts are suitably micro and cargo pants extra-glam.

Pierpaolo Piccioli paved the way with luxe satin fabrics and embellished pockets on his Valentino SS18 runway. Similarly, it was a case of Cargo 2.0 at Prada, Off-White, Alexander Wang, Saint Laurent and Chloé.

To her credit, Kaia Gerber – not even born the last time cargo shorts were a thing – has been all over this trend for months. A cameo as Lara’s little sister? We’d like to see that.
