In 2022, paparazzi photos of Cara Delevingne looking visibly distressed at the airport in Los Angeles hit the internet, prompting speculation about the 30-year-old model and actress’ well-being. In the images, Delevingne was seen pacing back and forward wearing socks outside while animatedly speaking to someone on the phone, her hair and clothes messy.

Now, six months later, Delevingne has opened up about how seeing herself in that state was a “reality check” and the catalyst to her choosing to get help, revealing she checked herself into rehab shortly after and is now on a sobriety journey.

Speaking to Vogue US, Delevingne explained she had just returned from Burning Man festival when the photos were taken, adding that she “hadn’t slept” and was “not OK.”

“It’s heartbreaking because I thought I was having fun, but at some point, it was like, ‘OK, I don’t look well.’ So in a way, those pictures were something to be grateful for,” she said, adding that being on drugs made her feel “invincible” and that her behaviour during that time was “feral.”

“It’s a scary thing to the people around you who love you.”

Delevingne checked herself into rehab in late 2022 and is now in a 12-step treatment program that has “made a huge difference” in her life. Prior to this point, she noted people had attempted “interventions of sorts” before, but that she “wasn’t ready.”

“That’s the problem. If you’re not face-first on the floor and ready to get up again, you won’t. At that point, I really was,” she explained. “All I knew is if I was continuing to go down the road I was, I would either end up dead or, like, doing something really, really stupid.”

Of her mental state now, Delevingne says she still has her signature energy, “but it’s not erratic. “I’m calmer. I’m stiller,” thanking her girlfriend, singer Minke, for standing by her side during her sobriety process. “She’s the type of person who has boundaries, and there came a point when she wasn’t going to have it much longer.”

“It was a blessing in disguise,” Delevingne continued, going on to also acknowledge the “support” from her friends.

On Instagram, Delevigne shared the piece, writing in the caption, “Every single story is important and this is mine. We are all human. Of course we will fall and make mistakes. We will walk through really hard things in life but it’s how we get back up again. We can learn and heal. Hard times are not final.”

“Difficult circumstances don’t have to hold us down or define us. There is hope. Always hope. Right here, I am grateful and proud and ready for all that is to come. Remember it is never to late change the direction of your story. To anyone out there still struggling, don’t give up, you are not alone.”

Her comments were immediately filled with support from her friends and fans, including Gigi Hadid, Vanessa Hudgens, and Selma Blair. Hadid said it best, “Proud of u & rooting for u Cbaby!”
