Cameron Diaz is one celebrity who’s known for her refreshing takes on everything from marriage to health and success. Although she was one of Hollywood’s highest paid actors, the star famously left the limelight several years ago to try her hand at a few new projects – one of the most recent being Avaline, a clean wine brand – and raise her daughter Raddix, whom she shares with husband Benji Madden.

But her latest candid admission is one that we didn’t see coming. Sitting down for a podcast recording of Rule Breakers, Diaz told host Michelle Visage that unlike the majority of her Tinseltown peers, she has zero interest in skincare – or even washing her face.

“I don’t even know. I literally do nothing. I like never wash my face,” she admitted, adding, “Twice a month if I’m lucky, I’ll be like, ‘Oh, I better put this on. One time works, right?’ Like is that all I have to do? I’m just not in that place right now like where I put any energy.”

Now while we love to see a woman tapping out of society’s unrealistic expectations, I’ll admit that I initially had some concerns for her skin (the same as I do for everyone who doesn’t, or who still *gulp* uses some variant of hand soap on their face).

Many dermatologists believe that most of us could do with a more minimal skincare routine, but gently cleansing at least once per day is recommended for healthy skin.

Without regular cleansing, all the oil, dirt and grime your skin is exposed to stay on your skin. It can also cause build-ups in the skin and pores, resulting in breakouts – my acne-prone, oily-combination skin is erupting just thinking about it (and we’re also hoping that Diaz at least wears daily SPF, which is crucial for protection from harmful UV rays).

But Diaz says that since stepping back from her acting career, she’s completely left behind all concern for the way that she looks. “I think that’s one of the biggest things of the last eight years,” she continued. “I’m like a wild animal, like a beast. I don’t care. Literally the last thing I think about on a daily basis – like maybe not at all during the day – is what I look like.”

The author revealed that it was societal pressures about her appearance that led to “toxic” behaviour when she was a young starlet – including sitting in front of a mirror for up to seven hours a day, where she would pick her looks apart.

“I just go back to the trap of it all, especially in our society, like what we value, what we think is important,” she said, adding, “I am absolutely a victim to all of the societal objectifications and exploitations that women are subjected to. I have bought into all of them myself at certain times.”

“You start to pick yourself apart, and you’re like why am I sitting here being so mean to myself? My body is strong, my body is capable, right? Why am I going to talk down to it?”

While I’m not ready to give up my cleanser just yet – and okay, perhaps it’s easier to just forget about your face when it looks like Diaz’s – we’re here for her unbothered approach.
