Billie Eilish has officially ditched her signature neon green-and-black locks in favour of a platinum blonde hue. The star surprised fans by sharing her striking new look on Instagram, which also saw her hair cut into a shaggy, layered style with curtain bangs framing her face. After teasing the change, the Everything I Wanted singer posted a video to her Instagram of her showing off her new hair, captioning it, “Did you guess correctly?”

Eilish had previously told fans of her intentions to change her trademark style in 2021, which is characterised by acidic green roots that fade like dip-dye into inky black lengths. During an Instagram Live back in December, she told fans a new style was imminent after the release of her documentary, The World’s A Little Blurry. “I’m changing it after the doc comes out,” she said. “It will be the end of an era. I’m going to give you a new era.”

Fans have been speculating about Eilish’s new hair for weeks, with many suggesting she wore a wig to the recent Grammy Awards. The 19-year-old had been wearing a lot of hair coverings in recent sightings, including hats and scarves, prompting many observers to wonder whether she’d already undergone a hair transformation.

Of course, given that Eilish’s hair was going from black-and-green to platinum blonde, it likely took a few turns in the salon chair to get the shade right – so perhaps this is a change that took a bit of time, and Eilish wanted to wait until she had the end result she wanted.

Eilish has spoken out in the past against critics of her hair, as fans complained that they wanted a fresh style from the star. “Fuck you guys. Stop making fun of me, my god!” she joked on Instagram at the time. “I’m fucking making you an album. I will not put it out if you keep making fun of my hair. Shut up!”

Despite finding mainstream fame with her iconic slime-green style, Eilish has experimented with her hair colour for years, including several stints with silver, blue and purple hues. As a natural blonde, this is the closest we’ve seen to her original hair colour thus far.
