Ashley Benson And Cara Delevingne

A lot of things came to an end in 2020. Family gatherings, birthday parties, bar crawls, music festivals, Donald Trump’s hopes of a second term, etc. Staying on brand, a number of celeb couples also called it quits during this tumultuous year. Quarantine and lockdowns certainly added a little more pressure to daily life, and not every love story can have a Hollywood ending.

Some breakups we saw coming (looking at you Demi Lovato and Max Ehrich) while others totally caught us off guard and broke our hearts (why Ashley Benson And Cara Delevingne, whhhyyyyy?!).

So grab the tissues as we look back on the biggest celebrity breakups of 2020 below.

Miley Cyrus & Cody Simpson

She really can’t be tamed. Not long after her divorce from Liam Hemsworth and hot on the heels of her month-long fling with Kaitlynn Carter, the “Wrecking Ball” singer got together with the Australian musician in October 2019. The two, who were long time friends before things romantic, got hot and heavy quick. The couple got tattoos together, declared their sobriety together, adopted a dog, publicly declared their love for one another and regularly posted sexy videos of themselves on social media. By August, the heat had fizzled and the two were over.

“Forever and ever no more. 🖤 The #MidnightSky is the road I’m taking…. head high up in the clouds.” Cyrus wrote on Instagram following the breakup.

Lili Reinhart & Cole Sprouse

In 2017, Riverdale fans lost their s**t when the actors who play Betty and Jughead continued their romance off screen. The couple was going strong for three years, but rumors of split began to swirl in the spring when it became apparent that the coupled up costars were quarantining separately. The two officially called it late May and Reinhart later came out as bisexual.

Demi Lovato and Max Ehrich

The “Cool For The Summer” singer went from zero to one hundred when she hooked up with The Young And The Restless actor in March and quickly got engaged in July. The couple suddenly called it quits two months later. “It was a tough decision, but Demi and Max have decided to go their separate ways to focus on their respective careers,” an insider told PEOPLE. “They have respect and love for one another and will always cherish this time they spent together.”

Cara Delevingne and Ashley Benson

And the lesbian community wept. While the supermodel had dated the likes of St. Vincent and Michelle Rodriguez in the past, fans were shocked to see her get involved with the Pretty Little Liars actress who, before Delevingne, had  only ever publicly dated men. Rumors spread that the two were more than just friends after they were spotted kissing in London in August 2018. Slowly, the ladies stopped hiding their affection and finally confirmed their romantic relationship in June 2019, while stepping out together for The Trevor Project’s TrevorLIVE Gala in New York City. Delevingne was the recipient of the Trevor Project Hero Award, and during her acceptance speech, she wasn’t shy about expressing her love for Benson

“I also have another very special woman in this room to thank and you know who you are,” she said. “She’s one of the people who help me love myself when I needed it most and I really needed it. She showed me what real love is and how to accept it, which is a lot harder than I thought.”

While the couple started off 2020 by quarantining together, their love couldn’t survive lockdown and they split in April after two years together. While Delevingne has remained single, Benson quickly moved on with rapper G. Eazy.

Sofia Richie & Scott Disick

They tied the knot in Nashville in 2013 and went on to have three children together: Camden, Jaxon and Saylor. The couple had an all-new spotlight on them when they starred in the E! reality series Very Cavallari which focused on the 33-year-old’s lifestyle brand Uncommon James. Kelly Clarkson & Brandon Blackstock

Kelly Clarkson & Brandon Blackstock

One of the most unexpected and ugly breakups of 2020 came from the American Idol alum and her husband of nearly seven years. The “Stronger” singer countersued, deeming the request unlawful and demanding $1.9 million in prior commissions be returned.

Clarkson was recently granted primary custody of six-year-old daughter River Rose and son Remington Alexander. A Los Angeles court ruled “that under the circumstances present in this case, the interest in providing stability and continuity for the minor children weighs in favor of [Clarkson] having primary custody,” the court document read, citing that “the level of conflict between the parents has increased. The parties have a difficult time co-parenting due to issues of trust between them.”

Blackstock is now reportedly asking for $436K a month to cover both child and spousal support.

“Let’s just get this out of the way. 2020 has been a dumpster fire,” Clarkson admitted on her talk show. “Yep, just all the word[s] I can’t say on this show, just piled together, and it’s on fire. That’s really what it feels like.’
