Sartorially speaking, no colour-fabric combination harks back to the turn off the century quite like mocha-coloured jersey; the plainer, less-sexier sister-hue to black. Back in the day, if this Y2K shade was spotted on a Supré rack in the form of a plunging, backless mini – with a diamanté buckle – that piece of jersey was worth its (light)weight in gold. Or at least AUD $45.

Hair up (so as to show your back’s nakedness), hoops (because Jenny From The Block told you so) and you were ready to slink and drape your way into a bluelight disco, backed by your loyal tribe of girlfriends all in numbers not dissimilar to your own.

Bella Hadid often stops me dead in my Instagram scroll. But today, this image of her almost brought a tear to my eye. A nostalgia washed over me as I remembered the runway walk I mastered as a teen as I entered a party wearing a dress like this one. I would envisage my crush stopping to stare in the same way Zack Siler (Freddie Prinze Jr.) did as Laney Boggs (Rachael Leigh Cook) walked down the stairs in 1999 film She’s All That. (The confidence on me was almost rude – where did it go?)

Hadid, known for her late 90s and early 2000s throwbacks, teamed the very small piece of material with white, knee-high boots, a leopard print shoulder bag and a knowing smile exclusive to the 20s supermodel club. The 25-year-old’s hair (by stylist Kiley Fitzgerald) was piled atop of her head in a messy bun, and a side fringe swept across her cat-eye (perfected by makeup artist Carly Fisher).

It appears Hadid joined designer friend Devon Carlson (who also looked stunning!) for their artist friend Alana O’Herlihy’s dress-up birthday dinner.

Hadid, who recently (and controversially) signed with Victoria’s Secret amid the brand’s revamp, said she re-joined the lingerie giant in a bid to gain back some past confidence.

“Another way that I realised my growth – which was super important for me – was being able to be in a setting that I once felt unempowered, and to now feel so empowered and so reassured,” Bella told E! News this week.

“I don’t know if people understand that just as much as you would feel that it’s uncomfortable to be in your underwear shooting a commercial, it is that uncomfortable,” she continued. “So the thing about Victoria’s Secret for me now is that they really, really care about us.”

Well, Victoria’s Secret needn’t worry. If the mocha mini moment is anything to go by, Bella Hadid has got the Lainey-Bogg-walking-down-the-stairs confidence. And my teenage self is really here for it.
