When it comes to beauty throwbacks, Bella Hadid is becoming quite the expert.
Despite being in diapers when banana clips, body glitter and double-buns were in fashion, Hadid is slowly becoming an authority on such trends, championing the beauty of decades past (namely the ’90s) with that iconic stamp of Bella-glamour. This time, she celebrated her 22nd birthday in New York City with boyfriend The Weeknd, BFF Kendall Jenner and a fountain of retro curls, all thanks to gal pal and super stylist Jen Atkin.
Parted down the middle and slicked-back with gel (even the baby hairs), a lush fountain of curls poured out from her crown, reminiscent of a ’90s girl group. Sitting somewhere between a young Mariah and baby Beyonce (read: the Destiny’s Child days), her hair was tightly coiled, almost ringlet-like, whilst the rest was gelled down and impossibly glossy – another classic beauty marker of the time. Just add some diamanté hoops, a diamond cross and glomesh choker, and the ’90s beauty picture is complete.
But, it’s not all glamour for the model. Just days before her swish birthday ‘do, she posted a selfie with the caption: “@jenatkinhair You there??… Sos.”
Save her strands, indeed. Proving even Bella can have a bad hair day, an unusually dishevelled Hadid sported some seriously questionable hair; messy, wildly kinked and lived-in (not the good kind), her plea to Atkin was a warranted (and timely) one. And Atkin’s call-to-action was superb: the perfect hair for a birthday girl who loves a little nostalgia, it was the birthday present any beauty-loving girl would wish for.
For Bella, it seems diamonds and curls are a girl’s best friend.
