TikTok beauty trends can be disastrous but every now and then, the algorithm will smile on me and I’ll be blessed with a video that changes my entire makeup routine for the better. Such an occurrence came about a few weeks ago, when TikTok user @jaridadoesntexist appeared in my feed to tell me that actually – I was doing my foundation all wrong.
She claimed that doing your entire routine in reverse – that is, starting with your finishing products first – is actually the quickest way to a flawless, long-lasting face. The video subsequently went viral, with many trying the trick (which has actually been around for some time) and being amazed at how effective it was.

In the video, Jarida recommends that users begin their base with moisturiser (plus sunscreen, obviously), then dust a light layer of translucent powder over the entire complexion. She then suggests spritzing your freshly-powdered skin with setting spray, waiting a few minutes for it to dry, then applying primer over the top. It’s only once all those products have completely set that Jarida puts on her foundation as the final step before applying the rest of her makeup.
I was one of the millions that gave it a go and found my makeup felt fresher, lasted for longer and looked smoother on my skin. The backwards makeup trend soon won celebrity fans too, with Lori Harvey recently swearing by the technique when discussing her makeup routine. Summer Fridays founder Marianna Hewitt also shared her experience with the backwards makeup trend, saying it ensures her makeup will “stay on 24/7”.
