Following the mode set by Zendaya, and subsequently followed by Margot Robbie on the Barbie press tour, method dressing has become the trend du jour for stars’ approach to red carpet style. Picking up that mantle today in Los Angeles is none other than comedian and actress, Ayo Edebiri. Arriving at the world premiere of Inside Out 2, the star sartorially embodied the ‘green with envy’ essence of her on-screen character in a crisp mint custom suit from Bottega Veneta. Ironic, yes, that a sentiment associated with longing for another’s possessions (or in this case, ensemble), would be represented with a lust-worthy silhouette. But isn’t that what the trend is all about?

For the uninitiated, the Golden Globe-winning actress will take her turn voicing ‘envy’ in Disney Pixar’s latest release. The animated sequel will follow the inner workings of a 13-year-old girl with the “little voices inside your head”, as the film posits it, rendered in cute anthropomorphic characters. Edebiri—who herself is no stranger to this content matter as she, too, portrays a cartoon adolescent grappling with changing hormones in the adult animation Big Mouth—paid homage to her pea–brain-sized character in a three-piece set directly inspired by the shade of her illustrated counterpart. Cut from the same cloth, indeed.

The silhouette featured a grain de poudre leather blazer and matching capri-length shorts, playing into the Italian luxuriate’s penchant for trompe l’oeil craftsmanship. A primed aquamarine button-up celadon silk shirt completed the look, and the star kept her accessories simple by pairing the preppy style with the brand’s Cher Horowitz-approved open-toe Cha Cha mules. Of course, it’s safe to say anything  Matthieu Blazy creates appears on our wishlist, but this made-to-measure version of ‘Look 63’ from the Pre-Fall 2024 collection has certainly brought a new level of longing.

Speaking on the red carpet about her approach to characterising envy, Edebiri explained she thinks “a lot of that root emotion is actually adoration”. “I’m trying to come from that place of positivity to kind of spin the idea of the character on its head,” she added. Of course, her performance as the burgeoning chef and restaurateur Sydney in The Bear also gleaned a thing or two about managing emotions. We wouldn’t want to know how ‘anxiety’ and ‘anger’ manifests in Jeremy Allen White’s character Carmy’s brain. While we wait for the duo to reunite on our screens in the upcoming third season, treat yourself to a light-hearted performance from Edebiri and watch the trailer for Inside Out 2 below:
