At Paris Fashion Week all anyone could talk about was Balenciaga. Demna Gvasalia had not only literally wrapped Kim Kardashian in tape, the creative director commented on the Russian invasion of Ukraine through a spectacular runway presentation. A small detail that did not grab the headlines so furiously was the invitation, which had been engraved onto the back of old smashed iPhones and sent to guests.

It’s true; Balenciaga has a knack for reviving even the most subversive and unexpected of trends but no one could predict the return of the old school iPhone – well, except Apple. Just two days after Balenciaga unveiled Fall/Winter 2022, the tech giant announced the return of the iPhone SE. New and improved.

Set within an iconic design the new iPhone SE is an impressive upgrade to its predecessors including the performance of an A15 Bionic chip, iOS 15, 5G connectivity, longer battery life and improved durability. The iPhone SE is available in three colours,(PRODUCT)RED, starlight and midnight, features a home button with Touch ID and the thick black bezel. The revised smartphone is as durable as it is beautiful, and features an aerospace-grade aluminium and glass design, now with the toughest glass in a smartphone on the front and back — the same as on the back of iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13. Basically, don’t go trying to smash it for that ‘Balenciaga effect’.

Before you ask, yes the camera is also stunning. Powered by the A15 Bionic – which makes heavy apps like photo editing super fast – it features a 12-megapixel ƒ/1.8 aperture Wide camera that offers photography benefits, such as Smart HDR 4, Photographic Styles, Deep Fusion and Portrait mode. The image signal processor in A15 Bionic also delivers significantly improved videos with reduced noise, particularly in low light, with better white balance and truer skin tone.

The iPhone SE is significantly smaller than say, the iPhone 13 Pro Max. It’s lighter and slimmer meaning it is perfect for anyone just wanting, well, a phone. For the micro bag aficionados among us, it will easily fit into a tiny purse.

With our continuing obsession of the ’90s and Y2K, the likes of the Motorola flip phone and Nokia Analog phone have come and gone with the speed of a micro trend. Make no mistake however, the affordable and familiar iPhone SE is here to stay. Learn more and purchase it, here.
