When Lauren Hutton first began modeling at 21, she once said, there was no such thing as ‘fashion week’. No matter. The eternally youthful spirit of the now-septuagenarian actress was to be found in most things presented during Anna Quan’s Holiday Resort 2019 show this evening at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia, including the model pictured above.

There was an image of Hutton, a veritable icon of resortwear style, to be found in Quan’s perfectly proportioned slacks in khaki, black and white; in the rigid white and navy trench coats made of Japanese seer sucker both belted and left flying open; and in the precise shirting in manifold styles, which Quan has by now honed into a signature that is entirely her own. Quan’s tell-tale shirting cuffs, often blown into exaggerated proportions, were seen for the first time as an accent on backless slip dresses in white and pale turquoise. The effect was echoed in the billowing bishop’s sleeves of banker stripe shirts that appeared as though lifted directly off the backs of Wall Street workers bound for vacation in Bermuda. Several looks also made use of a pearlescent raised jacquard weave with irregular pleats that shimmered and billowed where not weighed down with the sunken treasures of London jeweller, Alighieri, with whom Quan has collaborated in the past.

With each pass of the Holiday collection, a concise distillation of ideas explored to their natural limit, the designer’s vision remained unwavering. Here is everything you could ever need, she seemed to say, to make your beeline from sunbed to bar as smooth as possible.
