Ask any bride-to-be and they’ll confirm the gilded runway of Paris Fashion Week have plenty in common with wedding aisles. Both are high drama, high emotion, generally wildly expensive and involve the most eyes on you at one time most women experience in their lifetime.
Yes, there are official Bridal Fashion Weeks held around the world, but in the spirit of high fashion, we’d rather look to the trend-based Haute Couture runway shows for outfit ideas that aren’t your typical wedding dress. (Or celebrity Oscars red carpet dress, for that matter…)
At Givenchy, new creative director Claire Waight Keller – who created Meghan Markle’s controversial wedding gown – replaced a veil with a chiffon hood and added long, feather-like tendrils to a one-shouldered column dress.
Nihilo’s plunging V-neck and crinoline bell sleeves gave us Cersei in Game of Thrones feels, while Ellie Saab’s masterpiece closing look was more Charlize Theron’s Ravenna in Snow White and the Huntsman. (Ed’s note: heaven.)
Tony Ward, on the other hand, went all historical English queen on us, complete with cathedral window backdrop, to spectacular effect. (This is what Meghan wore in our wildest Royal Wedding dreams).
Valentino went the high-flyer route – literally, as in white feathers – as did Fendi and Georges Hobeika and Ralph Russo. Karl Lagerfeld’s bejewelled chiffon gown had us rethinking long gloves in summer.
Giambattista Valli gave a nod to mermaid chic, complete with black fishing net veil. (We can’t decide if that’s insensitive or not. ‘Trapped’ connotation much?)
For alternative brides, Xuan and Stephane Rolland can supply plenty of chic anti-wedding wedding ideas, but in GRAZIA’s books, Antonio Grimaldi owns the ‘rebel bride’ crown. White pants suit with built-in cape and metal bird-claw belt? That’s one worth giving your new mother-in-law a panic attack for.
