A night out in Los Angeles around Christmas time is certainly not conducive to the typical rich textures and tones associated with the winter celebration. But given it’s the one time we’re allowed to wear faux fur-trimmed mini dresses à la Sabrina Carpenter in her new Netflix special, we don’t blame those who indulge in the festive spirit.
Overnight in Beverly Hills, Hailey Bieber and Gigi Hadid stepped out in their seasonal best to celebrate the opening of Guest In Residence’s sophomore store. Given the timing, Hadid transformed the new boutique into a snowy wonderland reminiscent of Santa’s Workshop.
In lieu of elves, there were racks of sumptuous knits, cosy crewnecks and cable cardigans lining the light wood perimeter. Reindeers were replaced by a stunning pine Christmas tree decorated with green and red socks designed by the cashmere purveyor. However, it was Hadid and Bieber’s contrasting holiday party outfits that piqued our interest.
Serving both a posh and punk interpretation of yuletide dressing, the models turned moguls provided clashing takes on silhouettes and materials associated with the occasion. In Bieber’s case, the new mum opted for a polished look in the form of a matching velvet two-piece set from Yves Saint Laurent’s Fall/Winter 2002 collection, designed by Tom Ford.
Come the end of the year, we can always count on Bieber to pull a vintage velvet number from the archives, as we’ve already seen with the stunning archival gown from Thierry Mugler’s Fall/Winter 1998 collection that she wore to celebrate her 27th birthday in 2023.
Since welcoming her first child, a son named Jack Blues, in August, Bieber has embraced a more tailored aesthetic for her public appearances. Kickstarting her post-partum style in a baggy Saint Laurent suit, Bieber cemented her love for a fitted shape by showcasing her recent blazer acquisitions in a recent Instagram post captioned “business as usual”.
Keeping up this persona, Bieber completed the archival piece with sheer tights from Calzedonia, satin pumps and a matching black velvet Prada purse. She styled her hair half-up and half-down and dusted a shimmer of sparkle across her eyelids similar to the ‘sugar plum fairy’ makeup she introduced to netizens last Christmas. Very if Cher Horowitz was cast in The Nutcracker.
Hadid, on the other hand, appeared inspired by Lindsay Lohan’s character in Freaky Friday or Mary-Kate Olsen’s role in New York Minute. The 29-year-old pared a red and brown striped polo under a knitted mocha-coloured vest and styled her self-designed pieces with a leather and fur skirt.
She topped the candy-hued ensemble off with a pair of Christian Louboutin loafers and stockings, also from Calzedonia. Irrespective of your personal tastes, the party period is always an invitation to dress up as the most decadent versions of ourselves. Whether that read understated or ultra-showy, these styles are proof that we need not let the climate or dress code dictate what we wear.
