Children have always been on the agenda for Selena Gomez, but as the actress has revealed, her pathway to parenthood might not be quite what she initially expected.
Before she started dating her current partner, Benny Blanco, Gomez shared that she was determined to have children and planned to adopt at 35, regardless of her relationship status.
“Before I met my boyfriend, I was single for five years, with the exception of going on a few dates,” she said in a new interview with Vanity Fair. “And I was like, ‘Okay, if this is the vibe, then what is the most important thing to me? Family.’”
The 32-year-old, who was diagnosed with Lupus in 2013 and even underwent a kidney transplant, then added that her health struggles have altered her plans.
“I haven’t ever said this, but I unfortunately can’t carry my own children,” she shared. “I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s in jeopardy.”
In a 2022 Rolling Stone interview, the Only Murders in the Building star shared that the medications she takes for bipolar disorder might interfere with her ability to carry children.
“That was something I had to grieve for a while,” she lamented to Vanity Fair but added that she’s come to terms with how her family will come together.
“It’s not necessarily the way I envisioned it. I thought it would happen the way it happens for everyone. [But] I’m in a much better place with that,” she explained. “I find it a blessing that there are wonderful people willing to do surrogacy or adoption, which are both huge possibilities for me. It made me really thankful for the other outlets for people who are dying to be mums. I’m one of those people. I’m excited about what that journey will look like, but it’ll look a little different.”

Gomez has recently been out and about at the Toronto International Film Festival in Canada. Over the weekend, she stepped out in an all-black outfit accentuated by a slew of Tiffany & Co. jewellery pieces.
