Outside of Kendrick Lamar beef, Drake has faced another wave of online criticism recently for some comically voluminous parachute pants he wore to his son’s soccer game. While some thought they were fly, to others, including us, they were a fashion faux paus that went down like a lead balloon—until Ayo Edebiri changed our minds.
While wide-leg jeans have become the modern staple, returning to MC Hammer proportions has always seemed counterintuitive to looking good. But when Edebiri was photographed in New York City wearing some extra roomy cargo pants she made a compelling case for turning up the volume.
Spotted outside the Good Morning America studios in Times Square, the honorary Irish, who aptly starred in Bottoms, stunned in a navy menswear-inspired waistcoat and mid-rise khaki parachute pants—both plucked from Loewe’s Fall/Winter 2024 ready-to-wear collection. From Totême to Loewe, Rejina Pyo and Citizens of Humanity, barrel silhouettes have been on the up and up this season.
Varying in length, height and volume, there’s a spectrum of options to take off with, but the tapered iterations make for a surprisingly flattering statement piece, especially when paired with smaller tops and heels, as exhibited by Edebiri.
Whether styled for the office or after-dark with the right accessories, the shapely bottoms offer a twist to the usual ‘boyfriend’ styles we’ve been leaning on for the last few years. Whispers of the return to the skinny leg keep creeping up on us, but frankly, we’ll happily take too much breathing room over none at all.
