After it was announced that Lily-Rose Depp and The Weeknd (whose real name is Abel Tesfaye) would appear in a new HBO series last September, we’ve received the first official teaser to the high-octane drama. The series is co-created by Tesfaye and Euphoria writer Sam Levinson and promises to be “the sleaziest love story in all of Hollywood”.
The series is titled The Idol and follows Depp’s character, a pop singer who sparks a complicated romance with a club owner and secret Los Angeles cult leader played by Tesfaye. The cast and crew were overhauled in April to fit a “new creative direction” and now stars the likes of Troye Sivan, Steve Zissis, Melanie Liburd, Tunde Adebimpe, Elizabeth Berkley Lauren, Nico Hiraga, Anne Heche, Rachel Sennott, Hari Nef, and Blackpink’s Jennie.

“When the multi-talented Abel ‘the Weeknd’ Tesfaye, Reza Fahim, and Sam Levinson brought us The Idol, it was clear their subversive, revelatory take on the cult of the music industry was unlike anything HBO had ever done before,” Francesca Orsi, executive vice president of HBO programming, said in a previous statement. Fellow executive producers include Ashley Levinson, Kevin Turen and Aaron L. Gilbert while Joseph Epstein will serve as show runner.
Depp is also known for her performances in The King alongside Timothée Chalamet as well as The Voyager. The Weeknd has starred in just a few television projects including voiceover work for American Dad! and The Simpsons. He also made a cameo in the 2019 film Uncut Gems.
There is currently no premiere date for the forthcoming series so stay tuned for updates. Something tells us there will be a lot to unpack.
