Few hotels in the world are as deeply woven into the identity of a city as The Plaza is to New York.

Standing proudly at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Central Park South since 1907, the legendary property has welcomed royalty, Hollywood icons, fashion luminaries, and generations of travelers searching for the most glamorous version of Manhattan. More than a place to sleep, The Plaza represents something larger — a particular vision of New York defined by elegance, spectacle, and the enduring romance of the city itself.

Arriving at The Plaza feels less like checking into a hotel and more like stepping into a piece of living history. Outside, yellow taxis rush past and Fifth Avenue hums with energy. But the moment the revolving doors glide open, the atmosphere shifts. The city’s frenetic pace softens, replaced by the quiet grandeur of marble floors, crystal chandeliers, and the unmistakable feeling that you’ve entered one of New York’s most storied spaces.

More than a century after opening its doors, The Plaza still delivers the kind of experience travelers imagine when they dream about visiting New York.

And after spending time there myself, it’s clear the hotel continues to live up to its legendary reputation.

A Hotel That Shaped New York’s Cultural History

When The Plaza opened in 1907, it was immediately one of the most prestigious addresses in the city. Designed with the grandeur of European palaces in mind, the hotel quickly became the epicenter of New York society, hosting lavish parties, literary gatherings, and historic celebrations.

Over the decades, its halls have witnessed some of the most memorable moments in cultural history. Truman Capote famously hosted his Black & White Ball in the hotel’s Grand Ballroom in 1966, an event still regarded as one of the most glamorous parties ever thrown. The hotel has appeared in countless films — from The Great Gatsby to Home Alone 2: Lost in New York — cementing its place in pop culture as the quintessential New York hotel.

For many, The Plaza is also forever linked to Eloise (a personal favorite of mine, due to both my love for New York City and the luxury hotel life), the delightfully mischievous six-year-old heroine of Kay Thompson’s beloved children’s books who famously “lives” at the hotel. And her playful spirit even continues to be part of the property’s charm today.

Yet, in a city full of legendary landmarks, few places carry quite the same sense of nostalgia as The Plaza.

The Plaza’s Enduring Definition of Luxury

While its history is impressive, The Plaza’s continued appeal lies in its ability to balance timeless elegance with modern luxury.

Inside, the hotel feels every bit as grand as its reputation suggests. Ornate architectural details, towering ceilings, and sweeping staircases create an atmosphere that feels distinctly old-world — yet never outdated. Instead, the property manages to strike that rare balance between historic glamour and contemporary comfort.

Guest rooms and suites reflect that same philosophy. Many overlook Central Park, offering one of the most coveted views in Manhattan. Watching the park stretch out beyond the skyline — particularly in winter, when snow dusts the trees — feels unmistakably cinematic.

Yet it’s the attention to detail that truly elevates the experience. Service is intuitive and polished without ever feeling formal or stiff. Staff seem to anticipate needs before you even realize them yourself, with guests having dedicated butlers at their beck-and-call, creating the kind of effortless hospitality that defines truly great luxury hotels. Which is why it’s easy to see why so many travelers consider a stay at The Plaza to be a quintessential New York experience.

Experiencing The Plaza Firsthand

During a recent winter visit to New York, I had the opportunity to experience The Plaza firsthand — and quickly understood why the hotel has remained such an enduring icon.

There’s a distinct moment that happens when you arrive. The noise of Midtown fades, replaced by a calm, almost cinematic elegance.

My room felt like a private sanctuary above the city — beautifully designed, spacious, and unmistakably luxurious — especially staying at the property during the holiday time period.

It’s difficult to find the words to capture the truly special grandeur that The Plaza’s suites exude (which even include your own Christmas tree). It’s like stepping inside your favorite film. After long days that accompany staying in Manhattan, returning to the hotel felt less like coming back to a room and more like returning to a calm refuge amid the city’s nonstop energy.

What struck me most, however, was the sense that every detail had been considered. From the welcoming atmosphere at check-in to the thoughtful service throughout the stay, the experience never felt rushed or transactional. Instead, it felt curated — designed to ensure guests fully experience the magic of the property.

And then there’s the location. Staying at The Plaza places you at one of the most iconic intersections in the world. Central Park is quite literally across the street, Fifth Avenue’s legendary shopping lies just steps away, and some of New York’s most celebrated cultural institutions are within easy walking distance.

Few hotels place guests so perfectly in the heart of such a grand city, without sacrificing another element of the hospitality experience. And this is why The Plaza sets the standard.

While The Plaza is remarkable year-round, visiting during the holiday season adds an entirely new layer of enchantment.

The hotel transforms into something truly magical. The lobby glows with festive decorations, elaborate garlands frame the historic architecture, and a towering Christmas tree sparkles beneath the chandeliers. The entire space feels warm, celebratory, and unmistakably nostalgic.

Stepping inside during December and early January feels like entering a classic New York holiday film.

Outside, Fifth Avenue is alive with famous holiday window displays, while Central Park often transforms into a winter postcard scene. The atmosphere throughout the hotel captures that uniquely New York blend of festive glamour and cozy nostalgia.

For travelers visiting the city during the holidays, it’s difficult to imagine a more atmospheric place to stay.

Five Experiences You Shouldn’t Miss at The Plaza

While simply staying at The Plaza is memorable, certain experiences elevate a visit into something truly special. Here are the five experiences we recommend planning into your stay:

1. Afternoon Tea in the Palm Court

Perhaps the most iconic tradition at The Plaza is afternoon tea in the Palm Court. Beneath the restaurant’s magnificent stained-glass dome, guests gather for beautifully presented tiers of pastries, delicate finger sandwiches, and expertly brewed teas.

The setting alone is worth the visit. Sunlight filters through the glass ceiling, illuminating the elegant dining room in a way that feels both timeless and theatrical. It’s one of those rare experiences that feels just as magical as you imagine it will.

2. The Eloise Experience

For those who grew up reading about — or watching — Eloise’s adventures at The Plaza, visiting the charming Eloise boutique inside the hotel feels wonderfully nostalgic. The playful shop celebrates the beloved character and continues the story of the hotel’s most famous fictional resident.

3. The Famous Home Alone Sundae

The Plaza’s connection to Home Alone 2 has inspired one of its most whimsical culinary traditions: the extravagant ice cream sundae inspired by the film. It’s a playful nod to the hotel’s pop culture legacy — and a fun indulgence that adds a touch of nostalgia to the experience.

4. Champagne at The Champagne Bar

For something more sophisticated, The Champagne Bar offers a chic setting overlooking Fifth Avenue. Sitting there with a glass of champagne as taxis glide past outside feels like a quintessential Manhattan moment — elegant, celebratory, and effortlessly glamorous.

5. A Morning Walk Through Central Park

Perhaps the simplest yet most rewarding experience is stepping outside the hotel for a morning walk through Central Park. Within moments, the sounds of the city fade into quiet pathways and iconic landmarks like Bethesda Fountain and Bow Bridge. The Plaza even offers a guided morning run through the park for its guests.

It’s the perfect way to begin a day in New York.

The wellness destination brings the globally renowned skincare brand’s science-driven philosophy to the hotel, combining advanced skincare technology with highly personalized treatments. Known for its results-focused approach to skin and body care, 111SKIN has built a reputation among beauty insiders for blending cutting-edge innovation with luxurious, restorative experiences.

During my stay, a therapeutic massage provided the perfect reset after several days exploring the city. The spa’s serene environment feels worlds away from the buzz of Fifth Avenue just outside the hotel doors. Soft lighting, tranquil treatment rooms, and attentive therapists create an atmosphere designed for complete relaxation.

Beyond massage treatments, the spa also offers a range of advanced facial and body therapies powered by 111SKIN’s high-performance skincare formulations — treatments that aim not only to relax but to visibly rejuvenate.

It’s exactly the kind of indulgent pause that elevates a stay at The Plaza from memorable to truly restorative.

Staying here doesn’t just feel luxurious — it feels meaningful.

New York is a city defined by constant reinvention. New hotels rise across Manhattan every year, each offering a fresh vision of luxury hospitality. Yet The Plaza continues to stand apart — not only because of its extraordinary history, but because it captures something timeless about the city itself.

Perhaps it’s the unmatched location overlooking Central Park, the elegance of its historic interiors, or the quiet sense of glamour that lingers throughout the property. Whatever the reason, staying at The Plaza feels like stepping into a living piece of New York’s story.

More than a century after first opening its doors, the hotel remains one of the most iconic places to experience the city — and spending time there makes it clear that its legendary reputation is entirely deserved.
