A Rich History: Mykonos’ Iconic Belvedere Hotel

The story begins in 1969, nestled amidst the scenic hills of Mykonos. Back then, it was known as Mansion Stoupa, a private residence of the Campani family. Recognizing its potential, Sofia Ioannidis and her husband Ilias transformed it into a summer haven for renowned personalities like Piero Aversa and Thomas Fritsch. Soon, the mansion became a vibrant hub for artists, intellectuals, and the social elite, hosting legendary gatherings that became the heart and soul of Mykonos’ burgeoning artistic scene.

The hotel’s journey began with the Italo-American painter Piero Aversa, who was captivated by the unique atmosphere of Mansion Stoupa (now part of the Belvedere Hotel). Aversa’s circle of intellectuals, politicians, royals, and creatives soon joined him at the property, forming a sanctuary for connection and tranquility. Iconic figures like Julie Andrews, Hiram Keller, and Princess Soraya of Iran were regular guests at Aversa’s free-spirited gatherings and indulgent Dionysian dinners.

The Ioannidis family continued the tradition of social gatherings at the Belvedere Hotel. In the late 1990s, they inaugurated the Belvedere White Parties, the first events of their kind on the island to host eclectic musicians. These parties attracted an esteemed social circle, including renowned figures in fashion and design.

We visited the property to get a taste of this bespoke party palace and experience the modern magic that still whispers amongst its halls. When you step inside the Belvedere, you find yourself enveloped in a world of thoughtful design. Whitewashed walls adorned with traditional wooden shutters and locally crafted furnishings create a serene haven. It’s a conscious tribute to the island’s heritage, offering a glimpse into the true heart of Mykonos with an elitist-storied past.

But over the years the property has expanded, offering more private and luxurious options to its esteemed guests, specifically with the addition of their Hilltop Rooms & Suites. Located just up the street from the main hotel, the Hilltop Rooms & Suites offer unparalleled privacy and breathtaking views of the island, perfect for those seeking a tranquil escape with more space.

Perfect for those late-night partygoers who love to host in their own space, or for those seeking a more private residence secluded from the crowds, this new addition to the Belvedere Hotel truly sets it apart from the other hospitality properties on the island.
