A Masterpiece of Art and Interiors

The Fife Arms is a veritable museum of art, boasting an extraordinary collection of over 16,000 pieces. From renowned masters like Picasso and Lucien Freud to contemporary artists and local artisans, the hotel’s walls are adorned with a stunning array of works that tell the story of Scotland’s artistic evolution. The property offers guided art tours, where their incredibly knowledgeable tour guide, Shona, provides incredible insights into the history and significance of the collection. I experienced one of these tours for myself and was blown away by Shona’s expertise and passion for sharing the stories behind the art on display, ensuring guests can appreciate the hotel’s unique aesthetic and indulge in its creative inspiration.

One of the most standout pieces in the collection is the chandelier in the hotel’s private dining room by Subodh Gupta, an Indian contemporary artist. The chandelier is made entirely of stainless steel utensils, creating a dazzling and intricate display. It’s a unique and unexpected piece that adds a touch of whimsy to the hotel’s elegant interiors and is a testament to the hotel’s commitment to showcasing thought-provoking and innovative art.

The hotel rooms at The Fife Arms are equally impressive, featuring intricate details, luxurious fabrics, and a harmonious blend of traditional and modern design. Each room is individually decorated, reflecting the hotel’s eclectic and artistic spirit. From the vibrant tartan bedspreads to the antique furnishings, every element of the design has been carefully chosen to create a truly immersive Scottish experience (including your own whisky tasting left by the bedside) and a cozy haven for your stay at The Fife Arms.

A Journey Through Scottish History

Beyond its artistic treasures, The Fife Arms offers a glimpse into Scotland’s rich history. The hotel’s location in Braemar, a village steeped in tradition, provides guests with the opportunity to experience the authentic Scottish way of life. From the annual Braemar Gathering — a historic Highland Games event that is a colorful celebration of Scottish culture, featuring traditional music, dancing, and athletic competitions — to the nearby Balmoral Castle, the area is steeped in history and culture.

The Braemar area has long been a royal retreat, with the British royal family visiting every year since Queen Victoria and Prince Albert purchased Balmoral Castle in 1852. The castle has been a cherished family home for generations, and it remains a popular destination for the royals, even today. And if you’re lucky, you may just spot some of the members of the royal family at their favorite local spots and shops.

A Testament to Community

One of the most remarkable aspects of The Fife Arms is its commitment to the local community. The hotel has played a vital role in revitalizing Braemar, bringing new life to the village, and supporting local businesses. The hotel’s owners have also been involved in various community initiatives, demonstrating their dedication to preserving Scotland’s heritage.

During my stay, I had the opportunity to meet some of the local people who work at The Fife Arms. Their incredibly friendly and welcoming demeanor is contagious, and their passion for sharing their love of Scotland with their guests is evident, largely contributing to making my stay so extremely special and memorable. It is clear from the moment you walk in the doors at The Fife Arms that the hotel is a valuable part of the community. They have worked hard to build a strong and genuine sense of connection between the people and the place, making The Fife Arms a home to all.

The Fife Arms goes beyond providing luxurious accommodations and hospitality; it offers a range of immersive experiences that allow guests to connect with the Scottish Highlands on a deeper level. One of the most memorable experiences I had at The Fife Arms was a guided hike, led by the incredible Darren from The Fife Arms’ Ghillie team. We hiked a classic old Caledonian Pine forest trail behind the Invercauld House by the River Dee. Along the trail, I was able to take in stunning landscapes, including lush forests and towering mountains, on a crisp morning when both the weather and nature around us were transitioning from summer to autumn. Throughout the hike, Darren shared intriguing stories about the local flora and fauna, as well as the history of the Deeside region. Along the way I was truly transported into the way of the land of the Scottish Highlands, creating a profound sense of appreciation for both its history and its people. Our experience also included a picture-perfect picnic along the water (hot chocolate included!), cementing this storybook moment and valued time immersing myself into nature, away from the distractions and responsibilities of everyday life, into my memory.

Another unforgettable experience you can indulge in is the wild swimming session in one of the nearby lochs. Wild swimming is the perfect way to connect with nature and experience the rejuvenating power of Scotland’s pristine waters. At The Fife Arms, their Ghillie team can organize swimming excursions to some of the most stunning rivers and lochs in the area with their local guide Annie, allowing you to immerse yourself in the tranquility of the Scottish Highlands and discover the therapeutic benefits of wild swimming.

Named after the iconic fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli, Elsa’s is a stylish and sophisticated cocktail bar that offers a unique and unforgettable experience. The bar’s decor is inspired by Schiaparelli’s signature style, with bold pink colors, geometric patterns, and playful touches. The bar’s intimate atmosphere and attentive service make it a great spot to relax and socialize — perfect for enjoying a pre-dinner cocktail or a nightcap. The cocktail menu features a creative selection of drinks, many of which are inspired by Schiaparelli’s designs.

For an experience unlike any other, we highly recommend indulging in a bespoke whisky tasting at Bertie’s Whisky Bar. The sumptuously elegant and glamorous space is named in honor of Queen Victoria’s eldest son, King Edward VII, also known as “Bertie.” Join their expert Bertie’s Whisky Team for a captivating journey through the world of Scottish single malt. During this tasting experience, you’ll get to try four carefully selected drams, from their collection of over 500 whiskies, that showcase the unique character and flavor profiles of different regions, from the smoky peatiness of Islay to the delicate sweetness of Speyside. Welcoming both whisky aficionados and newcomers alike, you’ll have the chance to discover the true Scottish art of whisky and appreciate the nuances that make each dram truly special.

While whisky has traditionally been associated with male consumers, I was delighted to learn from Bertie’s Whisky Team that there is, in fact, a surmounting number of women embracing this spirit. Many women appreciate the complex flavors and sophisticated character of whisky, challenging the gender stereotypes that have long surrounded this beverage. There is also a large number of women who work in and run the whisky industry, from CEOs to distillers and blenders to marketers and brand ambassadors. So ladies, don’t be afraid to give whisky tasting a go at The Fife Arms, even if you are new to the spirit!

A Culinary Delight

The Fife Arms’ dining options are as impressive as its art collection. From the refined elegance and wood-fired cooking of The Clunie Dining Room to the cozy Scottish atmosphere and hearty pub fare of The Flying Stag (surrounded by portraits of real locals from the town!), there’s something to satisfy every palate. The hotel’s commitment to using locally sourced ingredients ensures that guests can savor the true taste of Scotland during their time at the property.

One of my favorite meals at The Fife Arms (and in all of the UK I’ve visited thus far if I’m being honest) was a seafood dinner at the Fish Shop, a nearby restaurant that sources its ingredients from local fishermen ensuring that the food is as fresh as possible. The restaurant is owned by an incredibly lovely couple, Jasmine and Chef Marcus Sherry, who make you feel right at home, and it was even officially opened by Her Majesty Queen Camilla in September 2024.

During my meal at the Fish Shop, I opted for one of each of their oysters to start — natural with mignonette and lemon, dressed with fermented green chili, and champagne tempura and mayonnaise — accompanied by the Chef’s Menu, which, for lack of better words, was indescribably delicious. Each course was even more exquisite than the next, featuring carefully curated dishes that truly tantalized all of my tastebuds with each bite. From the local favorite Macduff crab crumpet and salt cod fritter with aioli, to the creamy Macduff lobster tagliarini with chili, garlic, and chervil, to the melt-in-your-mouth Fife raspberry and almond friand with vanilla creme, I can honestly say I would recommend every single dish in this restaurant to any foodie looking for an unforgettable meal in the heart of Ballater.
