When discussing metabolism, we often think about how quickly our body burns calories. However, did you know that some highly popular foods can actually slow it down? Consequently, our bodies become less efficient at burning fat, and we may end up gaining weight, even if we’re not eating more.
On the specialized website SheFinds, Dr. Kubanych Takyrbashev specifically warns against certain types of meats, especially beef. Although we love to devour it, our bodies are not quite as enthusiastic.
Beef, particularly fatty cuts, is indeed high in saturated fats. Excessive consumption of saturated fats can lead to weight gain and increase the risk of insulin resistance, both of which slow down metabolic processes.
Beef, a Meat that Slows Down Metabolism
If you thought beef was essential for maintaining your energy, think again. According to Dr. Kubanych Takyrbashev, this beloved meat could actually be hindering your metabolism. “Consuming large amounts of beef, especially fatty cuts, slows down metabolism due to its high content of saturated fats and calories,” he explains.
The digestion of red meat, especially fatty cuts, takes time and energy, which can ultimately slow down overall metabolic processes. Additionally, the inflammation related to an overconsumption of red meat also impacts our ability to optimally burn calories.
Moreover, beef, being rich in fats, requires more effort for the body to break down. “The digestion of red meat is slow and needs more energy and time to break down the proteins and fats, which can lead to a slowdown in metabolism and have an impact on the metabolic rate. Additionally, excessive consumption of red meat has been associated with increased inflammation, which can further impact metabolic efficiency,” continues Dr. Takyrbashev.
This means that, despite its protein content, too much red meat can lead to weight gain and make it harder to lose calories in the long run.
Other Foods to Watch
Aside from beef, the doctor highlights other common foods. White bread, for instance, is rich in refined carbohydrates and causes spikes in blood sugar that may lead to insulin resistance. Sugary drinks are empty caloric bombs that disrupt blood sugar levels, affecting how the body uses and stores energy.
Finally, foods high in sodium, such as processed meals or salty snacks, cause water retention and a feeling of heaviness, indirectly slowing down the metabolism.
