While Sabrina Carpenter is prancing around New York City in vintage Chanel to celebrate the launch of her new Netflix holiday special, A Nonsense Christmas, Barry Keoghan is taking to Twitter to criticise the abuse and harassment he and his family have been presented with over the past week.

For the uninitiated, the Irish actor has been on the receiving end of vitriolic comments after he and the “Espresso” singer broke up. The split was first alleged by anonymous gossipmonger, DeuxMoi, before being confirmed by People. “They are both young and career-focused, so they’ve decided to take a break,” said the insider of their separation. However, in the days that followed, Keoghan had been accused of cheating, leaving him to make a personal statement about the rumours and nastiness he had encountered.

“I can only sit and take so much,” he began in a post shared to X, formerly known as Twitter. “My name is being dragged across the internet in ways I usually don’t respond to.” The Saltburn actor then revealed that he has come forward because it has gotten to “a place where there are too many lines being crossed”.

He continued to say he deleted his Instagram account because he “can no longer let this stuff distract from my family and my work”. (Keoghan is currently filming the upcoming Peaky Blinders film alongside Cillian Murphy.)

“The messages I have received no person should ever have to read them, ” he added before dismissing the comments as “absolute lies, hatred, disgusting commentary about my appearance, character, how I am as a parent, and every other inhumane thing you can imagine”.

Keoghan shared that people have also brought up his difficult upbringing and his late mother who struggled with drug addiction. But the real line that was crossed was people who were “knocking on my grannies [sic] door and “sitting outside my baby boys [sic] house intimidating them”.

“Each and every day I work harder to push myself on every level to be the healthiest and strongest person for that boy,” he added. “I want him to be able to look up to his daddy, to have full trust in me and know I will have his back no matter what.” “I want you to remember that he has to read ALL of this about his father when he is older. Please be respectful to all,” he concluded.

This isn’t the first time Keoghan has been candid about the online trolling he faces. Earlier this month The Banshees of Inisherin breakout star told Louis Theroux about how his lifestyle is weaponised as “people draw a narrative and go ‘absent father, deadbeat dad’ and more disgusting things I wouldn’t even repeat.” “Just the audacity of some people, man, it sickens me and makes me furious,” he said.

He also gushed over Carpenter in the same interview, which was published a little over a month ago. This may be a new ‘position’ for the pop sensation and the ‘cute boy with the thick accent’, but it’s clear their love story might’ve been short and sweet after all.
