Raising children in the age of social media comes with challenges that previous generations could hardly have imagined. From online bullying to the pressure of maintaining a perfect digital image, parents are constantly navigating unfamiliar territory. Even David Beckham, one of the world’s most recognizable celebrities, admits that protecting children from the dangers of the internet is no easy task.

Speaking to CNBC’s Squawk Box during the World Economic Forum in Davos, the former soccer star shared his thoughts on parenting, social media, and why allowing children to make mistakes is an essential part of growing up.

His comments attracted particular attention amid reports of tensions within the Beckham family, following public statements made by his eldest son, Brooklyn Beckham.

During the interview, Beckham reflected on the complicated relationship between young people and social media.

While acknowledging that digital platforms can be powerful tools for communication and positive change, he also emphasized their potential dangers.

“Children’s access to the internet today can be dangerous,” he explained.

As a longtime UNICEF ambassador, Beckham has witnessed how social media can raise awareness about important causes. However, he also recognizes that children can encounter harmful content, online criticism, and situations they may not be emotionally prepared to handle.

His approach to parenting is based on a simple principle: children need room to grow, even when that means making the wrong decisions.

“Children make mistakes, but children are allowed to make mistakes. That is how they learn,” Beckham said.

Rather than expecting perfection, he believes parents should help their children understand the consequences of their actions and develop the confidence to make better choices.

David and Victoria Beckham have spent decades raising their four children — Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz, and Harper — under intense public scrutiny.

Unlike most families, the Beckhams have had to navigate not only the usual challenges of parenting but also the constant attention of the international media.

Despite their celebrity status, David has frequently emphasized the importance of maintaining ordinary family routines.

Over the years, he has spoken about limiting screen time when his children were younger and keeping phones away from the dinner table to encourage meaningful conversations.

For Beckham, family time and open communication remain essential, particularly as children become more independent.

His philosophy suggests that setting boundaries does not necessarily mean controlling every decision. Instead, parents should provide guidance while gradually allowing their children to take responsibility for their choices.

Why Experts Agree That Making Mistakes Is Important for Children

Beckham’s comments reflect a principle widely recognized in child development: learning often happens through experience.

When children make manageable mistakes, they have opportunities to develop problem-solving skills, emotional resilience, and independence.

However, experts also emphasize the importance of distinguishing between ordinary mistakes and situations that could put children at serious risk.

An embarrassing social media post might become a useful lesson about digital footprints, while cyberbullying, exploitation, or contact with dangerous strangers requires immediate adult intervention.

The goal is not to eliminate every risk but to create an environment where children feel comfortable asking for help.

Ultimately, Beckham’s message offers a reminder that parenting is not about raising perfect children.

It is about teaching them how to navigate an imperfect world, accept responsibility, and learn from their experiences.

And perhaps most importantly, it is about making sure they know their parents will still be there when things go wrong.
