Silver Hair Shine
Goodbye Yellowed Grays, Here Are the 9 Shampoos That Make Silver Hair Shine

Toning, hydration and shine: what silver hair really needs, and the formulas experts trust. Going gray is no longer something to hide. More women are letting their silver grow in, and many love the result. But gray hair comes with its own set of challenges, and the biggest one is often an unwanted yellow cast that dulls its natural brightness.

The good news is that the right shampoo can make a visible difference. Here is why gray hair behaves differently, and the formulas hair experts recommend.

Why Hair Turns Gray

Hair gets its color from melanin, produced by pigment cells called melanocytes. With time, those cells slow down and eventually stop. “In most cases, graying is controlled by genetics,” dermatologist Dr. Viktoryia Kazlouskaya told NBC Select, adding that about 50 percent of people will have 50 percent gray hair by age 50.

Early graying can sometimes be linked to conditions such as anemia, thyroid disease or vitamin deficiencies, she noted, so it is worth mentioning to your doctor if it appears suddenly.

Why Gray Hair Needs Different Care

Without melanin, hair changes texture as well as color. “Since gray hair tends to be drier and wirier, moisture is essential for keeping it smooth and soft,” board-certified dermatologist Dr. Iris Rubin told Women’s Health.

It is also prone to yellowing. “Gray hair is prone to developing yellow or brassy tones, and tends to be drier and more textured,” says IGK hairstylist Olya Iudina. Stylist Christine Bellemare points to pollution, UV exposure, hard water, heat styling and product buildup as common causes. She recommends sulfate- and silicone-free formulas.

How Purple Shampoo Works, and How Not to Overdo It

Purple sits opposite yellow on the color wheel, so violet pigments neutralize brassy tones. “Using a purple shampoo helps to cancel out these tones, restoring brightness and giving gray hair a radiant look,” Iudina explains.

Use it too often, though, and silver hair can take on a lilac or ashy tint. NBC Select suggests using it about once a week and alternating with a gentle, non-tinted shampoo. Leave it on for a minute or two at first and adjust from there.

Beyond Shampoo

Follow with a moisturizing conditioner, use a heat protectant before styling and limit hot tools. A weekly mask helps with dryness, and a hat or UV-protective spray helps shield silver hair from the sun.

Goodbye yellowed grays. With the right shampoo and a little care, silver hair can look bright, soft and shiny.
